When western novelist Sadie Goodwin must pen a romance novel to rescue her lackluster sales, there's only one tiny problem- she's never been in love. Desperate to salvage her career, Sadie accepts an invitation to hole up at her friend's beach duplex for the summer and devote herself to this confounding genre. After all, where better to witness love than on the beautiful South Carolina shore? But Sadie soon finds many ways to procrastinate the dreaded task, like getting to know the beach regulars and installing a Little Free Library on the property. She even attempts conversation with Sam Ford, the frustratingly stubborn neighbor on the other side of the duplex. But things take an unexpected turn when Sadie finds inside her library an abandoned novel with a secret compartment, and a beautiful engagement ring tucked inside. Suddenly, locating the ring's owner becomes the perfect way to put off writing that romance. Sadie draws a reluctant Sam into her mission. And as the two close in on an answer to the mysterious proposal, she discovers a tender side to him. She begins to wonder if he just might make the perfect hero for her romance novel, or maybe even her heart. From the bestselling author of The Convenient Groom (now a beloved Hallmark Original movie) comes a sweet and sizzling story of a romance writer surprised by her own happily ever after. Sweet and thoughtful contemporary.

Not My Favorite

A Novel Proposal is a light romance novel written by Denise Hunter. Summary: Western novels are all Sadie Goodwin knows how to write. But when her latest book doesn’t make the cut, her publisher offers her one way to keep her writing dreams alive-write a romance. There’s only one problem. Sadie’s romantic life is non-existent. She wouldn’t know the first thing about writing romance. That all starts to change however, when she meets her new neighbor Sam. As their friendship grows, Sadie starts to pattern her new book a little too closely to her real life. Can their relationship survive her novel ambitions? My Thoughts: This book was a fun read, but I have some mixed feelings about it. I liked the characters, and I enjoyed the mystery that brings Sadie and Sam closer together. But it was obvious from the beginning Sam was going to figure out what was happening, and how Sadie was clueless enough not to realize it was a little off-putting. Also, the ending to the mystery really was just too clean-cut. They spend most of the book trying to figure it out, and then all of the sudden it was just done, and it really felt like too much of a coincidence which was kind of a let-down. I don’t know. I liked it, but it was pretty unbelievable in parts, and that threw me off. I would like to thank Thomas Nelson for providing me with a free digital copy of this book in exchange for my review. Thank you!

A fun read on the beach or anywhere

Whether you prefer the beach or a pool, this book is the perfect summer read. Not only does it have all the necessary romantic elements with an idyllic beach setting, it features an author whose publisher tells her she must switch genres in order to succeed—or else. Instead of lassoing another western in which she’s well-accomplished, Sadie Goodwin is forced to write a romance novel. But you don’t have to be an author to enjoy this story. One of my favorite things about this novel was the heading of each chapter: a tidbit of Romance Writing 101 advice. These cleverly hinted at what was to come.  To help stir the muse for romance writing, Sadie’s friend offers her mother’s beach duplex for the summer. Sadie needs all the inspiration she can get since she has never fallen in love and has no clue where to begin. Her neighbor, Sam, is staying in the other side of the duplex. He’s reeling from a huge betrayal and trusts nobody. He’s purposely staying on the beach to avoid people and recoup his losses.  Then along comes Sadie with all her spunk. The last thing Sam needs is spunk. Or people of any sort. But he finds himself  surrounded by both in plenty. He begrudges her arrival, her dog, and everything she’s doing. This tale has family drama, mystery, and romance playing out through a book mystery, a scavenger hunt, and a destination wedding. Sam and Sadie’s relationship grows naturally and believably. His younger sister is good for some laughs as she bonds with Sadie. Of course, this story is the happily-ever-after sort, but my predictions about the way some things would shake out did not all happen—which added to the fun. Despite my own notions getting thwarted, the author’s direction proved satisfying.

Sweet Beach Read

It was refreshing to see the lady make some of the first moves! It was sweet how Sadie baked and cooked for Sam, and was bubbly and confident around him. She wasn’t afraid to be her girly self, and I liked it! I was hooked because I couldn’t wait to know the owner of the lost ring or see if Sadie and Sam would fall in love:)

Sweet beach read

"Nothing softened up a neighbor like baked goods. She'd make those today so she could focus on plotting her book tomorrow. Her publisher wanted the proposal ASAP. The thought of that task overwhelmed her. Not to mention the large sum of money she owed. Her stomach twisted hard." When Sadie's publisher requests, that she change from writing westerns to romances, she is not so sure. After all, she has never even been loved. Loaned a friend's beach cottage for the summer, she is set to research stories. In the movies anyway. But trying to befriend her neighbor may also take a lot of effort - he is grumpy. Soon Sadie realizes that the best books are written out of a life well lived. Sadie and her dog, Rio, are a bit exuberant to say the least. I could understand why her neighbor was annoyed in the beginning. But the more one experiences Sadie, the more one realizes that her joy comes from a sincere heart. This book had elements of faith, some romance and even a bit of a mystery. I loved how Sadie managed to do everything but write most of the time. Part of her efforts included a little small library. This sweet story is a fun beach read. But is not all fluff - I was reminded of the importance of telling the truth to those we love is much simpler than trying to cover up reality. I loved how Sadie ended up with a new life that she did not even know that she needed. I read a copy of this book through NetGalley. I wanted to read and review it. All opinions are my own.

Enjoyable

Sadie Goodwin has never written a romantic book in her life, it's not like she has any real life experience to draw from. But Sadie has one season to write a romance novel or forfeit her publishing contract so she takes up her friend on the offer of an empty beachfront house free of distractions, determined to research her way into the perfect novel. Sam came to North Carolina to get away from the noise, but a chipper new neighbor with an outgoing nature that attracts even more people isn't a part of his plans. An engaging read, with likable leads and a idyllic setting on the North Carolina Coast. I loved how the author wove in elements about the "rules" of writing a romance novel, throughout the story. It was fun seeing Sadie and Sam get to know each other, albeit begrudgingly on Sam's end. I liked their interaction, and how they worked together to reach their goals. A quick enjoyable read, it brought a smile to my face. Heartwarming and engaging, a wonderful standalone novel for fans of sweet romance! I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

A Great Beach Read!

I selected this book because I found that the premise of a lost engagement ring was an enticing story. This novel would make an excellent beach read, as it’s not a heavy story and not incredibly long either. The characters were definitely relatable and I did enjoy their interactions as well as those of the secondary characters. The small beach town made a fun setting for the mystery of the lost ring. I have read several of Denise Hunter’s novels and always enjoy them, especially when I am craving a read that is a little bit on the lighter side of life. She has a tremendous backlist that will keep you entertained for quite some time! I borrowed a copy of this book from my local public library and I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.
