Now a New York Times best-seller! Long before the Clone Wars, the Empire, or the First Order, the Jedi lit the way for the galaxy in a golden age known as the High Republic! Vernestra Rwoh is a new Jedi Knight at age sixteen, but her first real assignment feels an awful lot like babysitting. She’s been charged with supervising twelve-year old aspiring inventor Avon Starros on a cruiser headed to the dedication of a wondrous new space station called Starlight Beacon. But soon into their journey, bombs go off aboard the cruiser. While the adult Jedi try to save the ship, Vernestra, Avon, Avon’s droid J-6, a Jedi Padawan, and an ambassador’s son make it to an escape shuttle, but communications are out and supplies are low. They decide to land on a nearby moon, which offers shelter but not much more. And unbeknownst to them, danger lurks in the forest…. "Rich internal third-person dialogue reveals dollops of inner turmoil for each character at key moments as well as providing some much-needed world-building to make this a winning choice. A great read for Star Wars fans young and old." — Kirkus Reviews "The comfort food that a Star Wars adventure ought to provide." — Slash Film

Good, But Short

Interesting Story, but it sort of just cuts off abruptly. An interesting new look into the Star Wars Universe. Is part of a series, but can be read in any order.

A Great Star Wars Story For Young Readers

As the first young reader entry to the High Republic era, Justina Ireland presents a story that is sure to delight young Star Wars fans. Relative peace is shattered by an event that brings together young individuals with varying talents and backgrounds on an adventure that will test their abilities, and ultimately each other. Young Jedi Knight Vernestra and her charge, Avon, lead this group through disaster, which ultimately becomes a matter of survival in the second act. Though this part of the book paces very slowly it provides ample opportunities for character development, revealing more of the story's very strong and talented female heroes, including J-6, Avon's sassy security/nanny droid. Conflict arises as expected in the third act, in more ways than one, which may pleasantly surprise even adult readers of this book. Ireland does an exemplary job of introducing the High Republic, and these characters, to young readers and they will no doubt be looking forward to read of their continuing adventures.

Perfect for young readers

Ireland's middle grade Star Wars story is light and adventurous for young readers. There are strong young female heroines and experiences with the Force that kids can relate to. I enjoyed this story the most out of the all the new Star Wars books I've read so far.

Great addition to the High Republic Era!

Justina Ireland's latest Star Wars book is filled with a fun adventure centered on a group of young travelers stranded on an unfamiliar world. Each of them is challenged in ways befitting the age range targeted for this book. While some heavier themes are explored, A Test of Courage is a good look at how events outside their control can shape young people struggling to find their place in a larger society. Ms. Ireland wonderfully captures the differences of each of our heroes as they face this daunting challenge, but still manages to balance the weightier issues with levity and some fun , but albeit, quick action scenes. A Test of Courage fits in well with the larger High Republic initiative while equally standing well as its own separate story. Younger readers will enjoy the familiarity of the young protagonists and fans of the Star Wars galaxy will have no problem getting lost in this book as I have. Recommended.

An enjoyable journey into this new era!

This book focuses on several young teens who get caught together after the ship they are on suffers sabotage. Jedi Knight, Jedi Padawan, Senator’s daughter, diplomat’s son, and a droid with personality make up the team that make it on a shuttle craft together. I really enjoyed this story, it was a quick read, reminiscent of the old Young Jedi Knight books, but with more digging into Jedi philosophy. Overall this was an enjoyable peek into this era and series, and I will probably check out more of them when they are released. Recommend for anyone who enjoys stories about Jedi, and as a fun adventure story for elementary/middle grade readers.
