A Witch's Guide to Fake Dating a Demon by Sarah Hawley

If romance and comedy were a thing, but the romance is squishy, and the comedy is in your face. The book happens over a span of a week in time, and it honestly, despite the time frame, just feels rushed in general. The author got the point across in the book, but there wasn't any exploration to the characters and environment. Small but eccentric details would've helped this book greatly. There was a plot, a problem, and a solution, but not much happening in between. The ending felt extremely rushed and bittersweet. If you're someone who adores sappy, puppy dog romance with a pinch of spice, this is as book for you. Otherwise, keep it moving.

fantastic series starter
Loved it I’ve been dipping my toes into more witchy reads lately, and if they’re all like this one? I’m so in. This was a romcom heavy on the com—just how I like it. Mariel is a “bad” witch (as in, not great with magic) with the quirkiest BFFs, and Oz (aka Ozorth the Ruthless) is a demon with a soul and something to prove. Shenanigans? Absolutely. Chaos? Constant. Hilarity? Nonstop. The fake dating setup was chef’s kiss—completely organic and so in character for Mariel, especially with her overbearing, egocentric mom constantly meddling. I was snickering the entire time. There isn’t a ton of worldbuilding, which actually worked in its favor. Sometimes heavy fantasy info dumps lose me, but this kept it light and easy to follow. Sure, I don’t totally know what all the other magical creatures are or what they can do... but I guess that just means I need to keep reading. 😉 The only thing that threw me a bit was the third-person narration. I don’t read a lot of it, and I didn’t realize how out of practice I was until I started this. It felt a little clunky at first (100% a me thing), but eventually I adjusted, and by the end it flowed really naturally. Also—Helen Laser crushed it on audio. Each character had their own distinct voice, and their personalities popped. She really brought this world to life. If you’re looking for a cozy, chaotic, magical romcom that doesn’t take itself too seriously but still brings the feels, this one’s a win. I can't wait to continue with this series.

Paranormal Rom-Com
A cute, fun, light, 🔥 paranormal rom-com! I laughed soooo much. Probably also blushed. Will definitely finish the series!

Everything I look for in a book
I recently got back into reading after years of not picking up a book. I’ve found some great books that I fell in love with, all lesbian romance, but I’m a sucker for fantasy so I decided to pick up this book. It did not disappoint whatsoever, in fact, it improved on previous critiques I had of other books. I love a slow burn, but I also want to be able to enjoy their relationship before the book ends. Boom. The romance is beautifully paced and I got to enjoy about 60% of the book with them already being together, and it never once got boring. I found the plot twist and resolution to be mostly satisfying, high stakes, but I didn’t like that the “demon plane is in danger” lie got found out quickly and dropped easily. It would’ve actually been a really interesting challenge to explore, but even if it was a lie, I feel that Oz should have been more upset about the anguish it caused him. A lot of thought was put into the world building, especially the new language, and there were a few callbacks that I was surprised by like the grammar rules, and made it all the more immersive. Really beautifully crafted. The toxic family dynamic was so realistic of how a parent who thinks they couldn’t do any wrong would talk and act; the romance also felt realistic. They were in love and it was great, I felt everything they were feeling, but they were also not perfect, whether that meant just being awkward or genuinely hurting each other. I did think the miscommunication/Mariel not wanting to hear Oz out was frustrating and overdone, even if understandable given her past, but it’s negligible compared to everything I love about this book. Maybe I’m being too generous because I haven’t read much in years and have loved every book I picked up since, but I can’t pretend that I wasn’t kicking my feet like a little girl. Absolutely loved it

Welcome to Glimmer Falls...
It took me a while to get into this one (totally my life circumstances, not the book). But once I got into it, I carried this thing everywhere with me. I was rooting for Mariel and Oz the whole way. I can't wait to see what happens in the second book.

Gets a good giggle
I’m not a big reader but this book was just the right amount of adult humor, whitty lines and spice I genuinely recommend this book if you want a small taste of enemy’s to lovers type of vibe, love fantasy characters in modern day situations and humor. It’s not the perfect book by all means but for a casual reader it’s a very fun read.

A range of emotions
I bought this book less than a day ago and I’m already finished. I caught myself laughing outloud at times (once you read it, you’ll know exactly at what times) and really feeling for Oz and Mariel’s struggles. The way the author draws you into Glimmer Falls makes you feel a sense of wonder and longing as you want to be there yourself. I won’t give away too much but I’m just in love with this story so much and wish I had a love like this.
