A sapphic twist on the classic fairy tale Snow White and Rose Red, perfect for fans of Holly Black. The western wood is where Ro's father built their garden, taught her to forage, and told her tales of the faeries who live there how to summon them, how to protect herself, and warnings of what they are capable of. Now, her father is gone, the garden has withered, and their family is struggling. Her mother and sister want to move into town, but Ro doesn't want to give up the memories of her father and his stories or the charming village girl who shares Ro's love of the trees. The forest isn't ready to let Ro go either. One winter night, on her way home from foraging, Ro encounters a bear attacking a fox. She fights the bear to save the fox's life, only to see the bear turn into a boy after her sister shoots him with an arrow. When the boy wakes, he has no memory of who he is all he knows is Ro's name and that he has to kill the fox. Ro never believed in the faeries from her father's stories, but she can't deny the magic surrounding her and that both the boy and the fox are victims of a faerie curse. She'll have to remember everything her father taught her in order to extract herself from this deadly game and keep her precious fox out of harm's way.

A beautiful, cozy fairytale retelling!

I loved this world and the dynamic between Ro and her sister. The cottage in the woods makes for the perfect snowy day read. It gave me Once Upon a Time vibes (when the show was good!)

Call Forth a Fox deserves 5 golden stars

There are only a few books I consider my go-to stories when I want to lose myself in another world. Markelle Grabo's debut, Call Forth a Fox, is undoubtedly one of these treasures. It's incredibly atmospheric and whimsical, brimming with characters who instantly feel like your new best friends. As a retelling of Snow White and Rose Red, the novel stays loyal to the enchanting elements that make fairytales universally captivating, weaving a narrative rich in magic, curses, adventure, nature, loyalty, and love. I hesitate to delve into the details of the plot because the journey of discovery is one of the book's most compelling features. It is a fairytale after all. So, I want every reader to experience this tale unfold as I did. What I can say, however, is that Call Forth a Fox is an amazing story and a remarkable debut by Markelle Grabo. It felt like it took my hand and guided me through to the last page, only to leave me yearning to return and spend more time with the characters. This is a story I'll definitely reread at least once each season because I'm sure it will resonate differently each time. Whether it's the warmth of summer or the introspection of winter, each reading will definitely offer a new and unique experience. For that Call Forth a Fox deserves 5 golden stars from me.

A Magical cast of Characters to Befriend

❤️🌹🦊 When I find myself making friends and cheering on fictional characters that I'll never meet...that's when I know I've just read one of the best stories. Call Forth A Fox took me into a magical world of characters who unexpectedly are caught up in adventure, strife, anxiety, affection, guilt, loyalty, love, respect and most importantly confidence in following the heart and being true to oneself. I was taken into the western wood and followed along on every path of snow covered ground - the world building was delightful & so fun to escape to.

A Fabulous Debut!

Ro would rather forage in the woods than spend any time in the village, where the residents wonder and gossip about everyone. One day, Ro attempts to save a lovely fox from the grips of a hungry bear. But when Ro’s sister intervenes by shooting the bear with her bow, something miraculous happens. Thus begins the mystery. Ro must consider the old stories that her Pa told her before he died. She faces the reality of the faerie realm as she discovers her own true nature and finds her voice. This fairy tale re-telling is a story of sisterly bonds, the importance of community, and the magic of first love. The gorgeous language alongside the quest for truth pull the reader in from the beginning. A fabulous debut!
