A NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER A near-fatal health emergency leads to this powerful reflection on death and what might follow by the bestselling author of Tribe and The Perfect Storm. For years as an award-winning war reporter, Sebastian Junger traveled to many front lines and frequently put his life at risk. And yet the closest he ever came to death was the summer of 2020 while spending a quiet afternoon at the New England home he shared with his wife and two young children. Crippled by abdominal pain, Junger was rushed to the hospital by ambulance. Once there, he began slipping away. As blackness encroached, he was visited by his dead father, inviting Junger to join him. It’s okay, his father said. Theres nothing to be scared of. I’ll take care of you. That was the last thing Junger remembered until he came to the next day when he was told he had suffered a ruptured aneurysm that he should not have survived. This experience spurred Junger, a confirmed atheist raised by his physicist father to respect the empirical to undertake a scientific, philosophical, and deeply personal examination of mortality and what happens after we die. How do we begin to process the brutal fact that any of us might perish unexpectedly on what begins as an ordinary day? How do we grapple with phenomena that science may be unable to explain? And what happens to a…

This is an excellent book

The great thing about this book is that Sebastian Junger takes you along as he tells you the story of this chapter in his life. You have to, however, except that it isn't simple. It's a complicated book and deep, but it's so satisfying.

In My Time of Dying

The author had a medical emergency in 2020 which brought him very close to death during which he had visions of his dead father. After recovering he dived into an investigation of what happens to a person when and after they die including those that have had NDE incidents. The book relates all of this - his own emergency, his past experiences where he could have died, stories about his family, war stories, overly detailed medical information, his research into death and dying, physics. scientific information way beyond me, etc. What started out as a very interesting book goes back and forth and all over so much you don't know when or where you are half the time. Worth the read but I wouldn't have gone out and bought it. Thanks to Simon & Schuster for the Advanced Uncorrected Proof of the book.

As a Barnes and Noble Bookseller...

Reading this was as though Mr Junger and I were sitting at a cafe chatting. He talks about his experiences and what they meant to him, both as he was going through them and years later. With nothing more than a spare napkin and a pen borrowed from the waitress he explains complex scientific possibilities for why and how the universe works. Specifically, why our life flashes before our eyes when we near death, why we sometimes see loved ones who have passed on,. and how we can possibly reconcile these experiences with the laws of the universe as we know them. As someone who (a mere three months before Mr. Junger) has also experienced an impromptu meeting with Death and struggled with the after affects, this book has everything I needed to hear. Thank you for this book Mr. Junger, and the tea.
