The landmark work of comics journalism by Joe Sacco, in a new hardcover edition with a new afterword by Israeli journalist Amira Hass and an introduction by Palestinian American author and critic Edward W. Said. Joe Sacco's breakthrough work of graphic journalism a now-established genre almost single handedly invented by Sacco won the American Book Award upon its initial release in 1996, and has remained a perennial, essential work for understanding the Palestinian Israeli conflict in the Middle East. This new hardcover edition includes a new afterword by Israeli journalist Amira Hass and also features Palestinian academic and critic Edward W. Said's timeless 2001 introduction to the work. Based on several years of research and an extended visit to the West Bank and Gaza Strip in the early 1990s, where he conducted over 100 interviews with Palestinians and Jews, Palestine was the first major comics work of political and historical nonfiction by Sacco, whose name has since become synonymous with this graphic form of New Journalism. Like Safe Area Gorazde, Palestine has been favorably compared to Art Spiegelman's Pulitzer Prize-winning Maus for its ability to brilliantly navigate such socially and politically sensitive subject matter through the immersive lens of the comic book medium. Sacco has often been called the first comic book journalist, and he is certainly the best.

One sided opinion

This book is very problematic from a historical and cultural perspective. It shows one side of a conflict that is extremely nuanced. It fits the narrative of the anti-Israel/anti-Jew propaganda that is popular right now and it fuels the fire with half truths and omissions. Not sure why Macys would sell this. It makes no sense.

Realistic. Truth

It shows the real image of a Palestinian life! What feels normal to any person living on earth, might not be accessible to Palestinians! I’m glad Macys is selling it :)

A must-read about Palestinian narratives

PALESTINE is a non-fiction graphic novel that exposes Sacco's experiences in Palestine. Each page relentlessly provides an approachable portrait of Palestinian community in the Occupied Palestinian territories. This unrestrained format furnishes readers with turbulence, violence and oppression suffered by those in a complicated relationship amidst Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The background notes, sketches and photographical elements unfold their history while Sacco includes his own perspective about certain aspects in the process. There's no attempt to smooth out the collective desolation/resistance and this is meant to be weighty. Sacco's singular art might not be for everyone (as it isn't my favorite), however one can't deny its impact at driving one to mull over. PALESTINE is explanatory and the tangible emotions don't allow one to be numb. This comic book shines light on Palestinian narratives and it is a political and historical work of outstanding originality and relevance. A must-read.
