Is love on the small screen better than the real thing? A young divorce cute finds herself in the ideal world of her favorite teen soap in this gleefully nostalgic and completely fresh romance from the author of This Spells Love. Jessica Joyce, bestselling author of You, with a View Newly divorced on the eve of her thirtieth birthday, Brynn is sick of heartbreak. She thought she had found her happy ending, but now she is living with a roommate, Josh, to afford her mortgage, and she is trying to adjust to her new single life. At least she got Carson and Cove to binge, her beloved teenage soap. The show ended unexpectantly on a cliffhanger after five seasons, and the two main characters, Sloan and Spencer, never got to declare their love for each other. The show is still perfect in Brynn eyes despite all the drama that goes down, things always have a way of working out in Carson unlike her own life. So when a birthday cake surprisingly shows up on her and Josh doorstep, Brynn makes a wish for the one thing she always wanted (but has failed to achieve herself) a happily-ever-after. The next morning, she doesn't wake up in her apartment. She is in Carson and Josh is there too. Everyone seems to know them, except

A quick pick me up

I really liked the concept of this and all the hijinks, easter eggs to teen shows, and drama. I think this was a fun, quick read that stayed light throughout. I think that there was some suspending of disbelief happening for me and if I did not ask myself too many questions or think on it too hard, I think that the magical realism in this book worked very well. I liked Josh and Brynn but I felt like we needed more time with them. T Overall, I think the concept of this story was really cool and there were some funny parts that I chuckled at. It was a nice, light read that would be perfect for a nice pick me up. @thesmutmutt on insta

Nostalgia + Love, What’s Not to Love!

I wasn’t sure what to think with this book originally, and was worried it would be too much like Groundhog’s Day, which is one of my least favorite movies. Yes, I know unpopular opinion. It starts out really well. Instantly was transported back to my teen years and Dawson’s Creek! I was always #teamPacey back then, so for obvious reasons I was #teamJosh from the get-go. The book also gave me Pleasantville vibes and was happy to see I was spot on as that being part of the inspiration. I love the interactions between Josh and Brynn. They seemed real and fresh, but I loved the juxtaposition with the fake world and the perceived happiness even more. I love that Brynn and Josh create havoc in Carson’s Cove by the smallest of things. Even more I love that it throws open the door on the illusion we create for ourselves of what happiness should be based on fiction and how if what we see in fiction was reality, we probably wouldn’t like how we feel being a part of it. Without spoiling ending, I do appreciate what Sloan deserves isn’t stereotypical. Downsides- I feel like the end especially rushes after the climax. Instead of strengthening the yearning and concern, it just sort of jumped to “happily ever after.” Other parts also felt rushed, and would have preferred a slightly longer book for more time on building the tension for the main characters as well as just adding some complexity and depth to many of the characters. Overall, not a bad read and really enjoyed the nostalgia it brought. 3.5-4 stars.

Like watching a sitcom

First person, dual pov Main characters: Brynn and Josh I loved This Spells Love so I was very excited to see another Kate Robb book coming out! Like her earlier book, this was well written, sweet, and madly hilarious. Reading this is exactly like watching a sitcom, which is a pretty unique thing that Kate can do with books. Brynn has been down on her luck, crushed after a recent and unexpected divorce. Now she lives in her home she purchased with her ex and her new roommate Josh. When a night out with the girls takes them to the bar that Josh bartends at, Brynn is able to make an escape with his help. The pair weren’t necessarily friends at this point, but Josh could see Brynn’s despair, and so he takes her home and watches her favorite show with her: Carson’s Cove. The next morning, both of them wake up IN Carson Cove. For real. This show is like a Gilmore Girls, One Tree Hill classic early 2000s teen drama. It is made up but the author explains it so well it feels like I’ve watched it. The pair are stuck in this weird dimension of Carson’s Cove but 10+ years later after the shows finale. They have to navigate this world as if they are characters in the show, and they can’t return until they perform the finale that Carson’s Cove deserved: Brynn’s character Sloan ending up with boy next door Spencer. But with Josh also in the mix, Brynn begins to see the flaws in her beloved nostalgic tv show. On paper, this was perfect for me. However I did for some reason have a hard time finishing this. I would be enjoying the story, but every time I put it down I would forget about it for long periods of time. So maybe while I loved the stories and the characters and the humor, it wasn’t quite exciting enough to keep my attention. I blame the internet for my short attention span. The concept of this was so good and the reading experience was amazing. I can’t really think of anything I DIDN’T like about this book, just that it maybe didn’t keep me completely engrossed the whole time. That is probably a me thing though. I highly recommend this!! 4.5 stars

Read this!

Oh all the rom-com-teenage-dramedy feels mixed up for 30+ year olds. Very sweet journey back to the souls of DC, OTH, and more. This story shines a light that not everything was picture perfect on our CW dramas, but instead you need to fight for what is right for you - and your heart. Super sweet story of finding yourself - and picking your dream - even if it’s not what you originally had in mind.

Comfy cozy read!

This was such a cute story. I found it so relatable. I think most people have a comfort show they binge watch when they needed a pick me up. There is something so reassuring about the problems that find solutions during a one hour episode. If only life was so easy! I also was a young divorcee who lost many of our mutual friends so I completely understood the loneliness that comes from divorce. The whole book gave me warm fuzzies and was a cozy read.

Whimsical, Romantic, and Quirky

I truly loved this book! This is everything I would have wanted to read out of a book if I was still a teenager. I was swept away into Carson’s Cove the minute I started reading. The way I would eat up a 2000s teen drama was the same way that I ate this book up! This book was clearly inspired by One Tree Hill, The O.C. (two of my favorite teen dramas might I add), and Dawson’s Creek and my millennial/genz heart couldn’t have been happier. It was fun, whimsical, and quirky. I don’t think I have ever read a book like it, and I will definitely be reading more of Kate Robb.

A love letter to Pacey Witter

I was so absolutely consumed by this book that I finished it in one sitting. The nods to early 2000's teen tv dramas was done so beautifully that I almost forgot I was reading. This was the first time in a long time that I didn't notice how long each chapter was because I was so interested in the story. It was such a fun, light-hearted read with the best kind of predictable storyline. The premise of the story truly encompassed the "but what happens next" that we all face once our favourite shows roll the credits for the final time. Even if you were happy with how things ended, you always sort of wonder what would have happened had the show continued & this book did a perfect job of portraying that in an engaging way. Both main characters were extremely likeable & had a beautiful mix of traits from some of my favourite tv characters. It truly was just a perfect love letter to early 2000's tv. Highly recommend if you're looking for a nice blast from the past or break from reality.

Brynn and Josh

This book was a fun, quick read, but it didn't really pull me in. Brynn, the female MC , got divorced at 26 and is still trying to find her place in the world at 30. She accidentally makes a wish that brings her and her roommate, Josh, onto the set of her favorite teen TV show. I enjoyed that Brynn learned about how things might look perfect on the outside but aren't always perfect on the inside. I think that's a valuable lesson for anybody at any age. I caught many of the Dawson's Creek and One Tree Hill similarities, which was fun because those are shows I grew up with. This book has dual POV (Brynn and Josh), forced proximity and insta-love, and is a good light read.
