Poorly designed heel strap

I wanted to love these, but the heel strap is just odd and poorly designed. If you tighten it enough to be snug on your heel, the sides that connect to the shoe twist and dig into your foot. If you leave it loose, it doesn't serve any purpose. It almost looks like you can have the strap come over the top of your foot, but that doesn't quite work, either.
