It's a fun, frothy quintessentially British romcom about a certified chaos demon and a stern brunch daddy with a heart of gold faking a relationship. -New York Times bestselling author Talia HibbertAMAZON BEST BOOK OF THE MONTH Named a best book of the year by Oprah Magazine, Entertainment Weekly, Goodreads, The Washington Post, and more! WANTED:One (fake) boyfriend Practically perfect in every wayLuc O'Donnell is tangentially-and reluctantly-famous. His rock star parents split when he was young, and the father he's never met spent the next twenty years cruising in and out of rehab. Now that his dad's making a comeback, Luc's back in the public eye, and one compromising photo is enough to ruin everything. To clean up his image, Luc has to find a nice, normal relationship. . . and Oliver Blackwood is as nice and normal as they come. He's a barrister, an ethical vegetarian, and he's never inspired a moment of scandal in his life. In other words: perfect boyfriend material. Unfortunately, apart from being gay, single, and really, really in need of a date for a big event, Luc and Oliver have nothing in common. So they strike a deal to be publicity-friendly (fake) boyfriends until the dust has settled. Then they can go their separate ways and pretend it never happened. But the thing about fake-dating is that it can feel a lot like real-dating.

So good

I read this a while ago but it was so good that it stuck in my mind. I love the slow burn and the tears that came with this book were wonderful. There will be moments you hate the book but you get over it.

Funny writing but unlikable characters

This is the second Alexis Hall book I’ve read and I am a little baffled. The writing is excellent and super funny. The side characters are interesting and the dialog is great. However, I think this author might do better switching to a different genre. The love story just didn’t make sense. Neither of the heros was very likes me and it wasn’t really clear why they liked each other. I think the idea was they were both messed up and it made them understand each other but it came off as they were both desperate and settled for the first person who wanted a real relationship with them. Finally the whole subplot with the father is oddly pointless. I could have done with that being cut and replaced with a sex scene or two.

An utterly perfect fake-dating romance.

REVIEW ⚠️cw: homophobia, cancer, anxiety, body shaming⚠️ Luc O'Donnell, son of an absentee rockstar father, is a loveable hot mess. When his latest public disaster threatens his job he needs to find a respectable (fake) boyfriend. Stat. Oliver Blackwood is everything Luc is not: a criminal barrister; eloquent; and seemingly in complete control of his life. But are they as different as they think? Well, I absolutely ADORED this book. At turns, I was crying laughing then ugly sobbing, but I was invested in Luc (and Oliver) from the first page. Luc's self-deprecating humour was hilarious, but also achingly heartbreaking. So accustomed to being used and/or misinterpreted, he's an anxious mess, constantly putting his foot in his mouth. That only made him more lovable to me. Meanwhile, Oliver is the seemingly perfect man, but he's almost as insecure as Luc. He was so sweet and patient with Luc, and I loved them most when they were at their most vulnerable with each other, especially when they were slowly telling each other how much they cared about each other through their actions. I imagine some might have been frustrated with him in chapter 48 but I understood his dilemma, and both he and Luc absolutely broke my heart. He absolutely redeemed himself in the perfect ode to Bridget Jones. There are so many brilliantly observed characters in the story, from Alex the outrageously posh (and often inappropriate) co-worker, to Luc's Drag Race-obsessed mum and her bestie, Judy. I also loved Luc and Oliver's best friends so much. The humour is abundant and had me snorting with laughter, but it's balanced perfectly with heavier, emotional moments. An utterly perfect fake-dating romance.

Bested My Expectations

Note to readers of this review: romantic comedy is not something I generally read. That aside, I found this book quite a delight and it bested my expectations. The characters felt three-dimensional - on the light side - and the writing was witty and informed. I was pleasantly surprised by the emotional insight and psychological understanding the author has regarding interpersonal and intrapersonal relationships. The main characters are quite likeable and charming, while at the same time having plenty of flaws to keep them, their relationship with each other, and their relationships with the varied supporting characters engaging and rewarding. In addition, the novel would work spectacularly as a limited series with its hilarious and specifically drawn supporting cast and it's intelligent and universal themes. Congratulations to Alexis Hall for a well-written and genuinely funny book.

Hilarious!!!

This book will have you laughing out loud. I’ve read a lot of books but this is my new favorite. The characters feel so real, like you could really run into them strolling through London.
