Braiding Sweetgrass - Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge and the Teachings of Plants by Robin Wall Kimmerer
A New York Times Bestseller A Washington Post Bestseller Named a "Best Essay Collection of the Decade" by Literary Hub As a botanist, Robin Wall Kimmerer has been trained to ask questions of nature with the tools of science. As a member of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation, she embraces the notion that plants and animals are our oldest teachers. In Braiding Sweetgrass, Kimmerer brings these two lenses of knowledge together to take us on “a journey that is every bit as mythic as it is scientific, as sacred as it is historical, as clever as it is wise” (Elizabeth Gilbert). Drawing on her life as an indigenous scientist, and as a woman, Kimmerer shows how other living beings-asters and goldenrod, strawberries and squash, salamanders, algae, and sweetgrass-offer us gifts and lessons, even if we've forgotten how to hear their voices. In reflections that range from the creation of Turtle Island to the forces that threaten its flourishing today, she circles toward a central argument: that the awakening of ecological consciousness requires the acknowledgment and celebration of our reciprocal relationship with the rest of the living world. For only when we can hear the languages of other beings will we be capable of understanding the generosity of the earth, and learn to give our own gifts in return.

This book changed my life
I picked this up randomly at a book shop that was so unorganized I was thrown into orbit, but this book was perfectly centered on a table and I grabbed and it and left. I have never read anything more beautifully written. Robin Wall Kimmerer eloquently delivers information and personal anecdotes about the natural beauty and magic of the earth. She connects her scientific knowledge to her cultural roots and relationship with the land. This is literally my bible and my Roman Empire, there is not a day that goes by that I do not think about this book.

Fascinating and beautifully written
Fascinating and beautifully written. I l found this audiobook after searching for a book that would meet the "nature" square for library bingo. I'm not sure I would have found it otherwise, and I'm so glad I did! It's really fascinating information and provided in accessible language (it doesn't feel like you're reading a textbook). The audiobook is read by the author.

Braiding Sweetgrass
This is one of the most profound books I have ever read. I treasure it, and count it one of my favorites (and I read LOTS of books!). It spoke to my soul, and I have recommended it, and gifted it, to many friends and they all had the same reaction. It is one to dip into again and again, and new discoveries will come each time.
