Won every award in the book and it deserves it!

Woodson does an excellent job in this novel in verse of capturing everything that makes a story great: characters that pull at your heartstrings, settings that transport you and make you gasp at their beauty, and lyrical poetry that is easy enough for your child to understand but complex enough to stretch their (and your) minds. Woodson doesn’t sugarcoat the hardships she had to go through a child, but because they are still viewed from her childhood eyes, the story remains kid-friendly. This novel is a wonderful way to introduce your kids to the civil rights movement, how families can be messy and loving at the same time, and how to keep on dreaming all at once. A must have for any family’s bookshelf!

Childhood through a black girl's eyes

Most adults can't really put themselves back into their childhood and picture the world as they saw it as a child. Jacqueline Woodson can do it magnificently. Yes, it is written more for children, but we adults can benefit from seeing that perspective.
