The landmark, bestselling account of the crimes against American Indians during the 19th century, now on its 50th Anniversary. First published in 1970, Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee is Dee Brown's eloquent, meticulously documented account of the systematic destruction of American Indians during the second half of the nineteenth century. A national bestseller in hardcover for more than a year after its initial publication, it has sold almost four million copies and has been translated into seventeen languages. It was the basis for the 2007 movie of the same name from HBO films. Using council records, autobiographies, and firsthand descriptions, Brown introduces readers to great chiefs and warriors of the Dakota, Ute, Sioux, Cheyenne, and other tribes, revealing in heartwrenching detail the battles, massacres, and broken treaties that methodically stripped them of freedom. A forceful narrative still discussed today as revelatory and controversial, Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee permanently altered our understanding of how the American West came to be defined.

Respect the treaties!

A historical non-fiction book on the mass genocide and extinction (of some tribes) of the American Indian. Dee Brown takes us time traveling to the start of the battles, massacres, and forced relocations of the different groups of the natives thru modern times. Brown does a remarkable job of putting together the timelines the battles and massacres, showing how our modern day reservations have started. This book is telling of how the government went to great lengths to force relocate the Indians and making some groups go extinct thru broken promises, broken treaties, and deceitful practices. Brown encases this historical book thru great research, and eyewitness reports of the different time periods. This book is one of my favorites and I highly recommend it to learning more about American Indian history.

Wonderful!

I am a high school sophomore and I decided to read this book for a research project on the Wounded Knee Massacre. It provided great details about wars and things that happened to Native Americans because of expansion and the Americans taking land. It helped inform me of different aspects of Native American culture that helped with my project and that I never knew about before. It was a kind of lengthy book but it was worth it because it was informative and very interesting. It provided info about different wars which was helpful to my research. The information given in this book was useful and very informative. I recommend this book for anyone who loves learning about Native American history. It is a great book to use to learn about the difficulties Native Americans faced. Although it is a tough topic to read about and learn about it is very important for us to see the difficulties they faced and how their lives changed. I recommend this book for anyone who has time and wants to learn about this topic or anyone who has to learn about Native American history
