Just won't focus on anything close

This was my first RF lens for my R6 II. I cannot say I'm overwhelmed by it. It's replacing an EF 24-70 f/4L IS USM Macro for macro work. While it does do that job somewhat better, it's nowhere near the improvement I was anticipating. The EF 24-70 would hold focus on a subject near it's max magnification of .7X so tracking bugs crawling around was relatively easy. The RF 100 absolutely will not hold focus if you're asking more than .5X out of it. It'll snap to focus, then drift around until it gives up and just runs the focus out into the middle of nowhere. I'm using a strict single point, and this thing won't stay stuck to anything anywhere near 1X, much less 1.4X. It's basically a manual focus lens for anything I use it for. It does get a sharper shot, but it makes me work a LOT harder for them. I'm questioning whether buying the EF lens and a good flash would have been wiser.

Fast.

Produces crisp, clear, and beautiful pictures. Fast and quiet focus. Lens is light and very comfortable to use. Still learning to use the SA ring, not sure I will consistently use the feature since I prefer sharp images.

An excellent macro lens

Very sharp lens, easy to focus on the small objects, and can even focus on the tiny face, for example the face of a watch.

Reach Out Touch some one at 100mm

All the reviewers on YouTube claims this was a no brainer. I thought it was only for macro photograph but when I took to 2023 Eastern Parkway Labor Day Parade. I was giddy with joy. It was mostly a lucky surprised but the moment and the distance will have you salivating for the RF 135mm. Always remember your minimum focusing distance because you'll miss out on the festivities as its happen.

Amazing Macro Lens

I am only a hobbyist, but I gotten great results with this RF 100mm F/2.8 Macro lens. I am using a Canon EOS R7 which gives me a focal length of 160mm. My only compliant is that the auto focus can be a little slow and the camera auto tracking can mistake your subject. Hopefully there is a firmware update for the camera that can help fix this issue.

Appreciated Improvements

I grew up with the always fun EF 100mm Macro and when I dove into Canon's mirrorless R series bodies it became obvious very quickly that the new RF lenses were worthwhile improvements as well. While I initially used an EF-RF adapter and was completely satisfied using 'old' glass on the new bodies I have found that pairing RF lenses with RF bodies takes every aspect of the photography experience up, out, and beyond expectation. Upgrading from the EF (very old non-L version) to the RF 100mm L brought with it greater magnification, closer focal distance, amazingly fast and quiet auto focus, and a fun Spherical Aberration tweak control. I can't say how much of an upgrade this is from the EF-L version but I know I'm amazed from where I stepped up from (and I was really happy with the EF). The SA adjustment is great for portraits and I leave it locked neutral for Macro work. If you're looking for the most fun per dollar lens you can own buy this! *The examples attached were taken at the ends of the aperture settings to give you an idea of the visual flexibility (f2.8 to 32)

Back focusing issue

After typing a long review explaining everything, when I tried to post, the website says ad blockers are blocking reviews... so I disabled ad blockers, then my review disappeared. Let me make this short, this lens is back focusing starting at f4 and all the way to f22. Even using manuaI focus with Canon's own focus peaking on the R5, I got the same result. So I googled, and found out, it is a known issue. Thank you Canon, I will return this lens ASAP.
