The acclaimed New York Times bestseller! Welcome, welcome to Caraval-Stephanie Garber's sweeping tale of the unbreakable bond between two sisters. It's the closest you'll ever find to magic in this world Scarlett has never left the tiny island where she and her beloved sister, Tella, live with their powerful, and cruel, father. Now Scarlett's father has arranged a marriage for her, and Scarlett thinks her dreams of seeing Caraval, the far-away, once-a-year performance where the audience participates in the show, are over. But this year, Scarlett's long-dreamt of invitation finally arrives. With the help of a mysterious sailor, Tella whisks Scarlett away to the show. Only, as soon as they arrive, Tella is kidnapped by Caraval's mastermind organizer, Legend. It turns out that this season's Caraval revolves around Tella, and whoever finds her first is the winner. Scarlett has been told that everything that happens during Caraval is only an elaborate performance. But she nevertheless becomes enmeshed in a game of love, heartbreak, and magic with the other players in the game. And whether Caraval is real or not, she must find Tella before the five nights of the game are over, a dangerous domino effect of consequences is set off, and her sister disappears forever. Welcome, welcome to Caraval beware of getting swept too far away.

Cute & Whimsical

** 4.5 Stars** I thought this was super cute & whimsical! I listened to the audiobook (kudos to you Rebecca Soler) and had a good time. I'm normally super critical but this one was just a mood / vibe read for me, something to put on when I was doing my skincare or driving. If I really wanted to I could probably find something to critique this a little harder, but honestly I just enjoyed going along for the ride. I loved the relationship between Scarlett and Tella, the budding romance between Scarlett and Julian, and the whole Caraval adventure experience. Maybe it's because I watched too many tiktok edits with Melanie Martinez's "Carousel" playing in the background, but I wish we had just a little more whimsy in the world building and descriptions of the locations around Caraval. Lean a little more into the dark carnival vibes we've got goin on. All in all, it was cute, full of whimsy, and I enjoyed it. What more can you ask for?

A Bookstagram classic!

Caraval has been a Bookstagram classic for years, so I was excited to finally get my eyes (or rather, my ears) on it this fall. And while it was a great story with a rather unique premise, I'm not entirely sure it lived up to the hype. If you enjoyed The Night Circus or Phantasma, you'll love Caraval! I'm hoping the second and third in the series help broaden the story and shed more light onto all of the big reveals at the end.

Plot wasn’t good and highly over idealized

This book was very over idealized and that made the romance aspect feel cringy. For example there was one of those “ ‘The sunset looks so pretty, but not as pretty as you.’” moments. The ending was also not fulfilling at all. A building theme in the book was who she loves more, her sister or her love interest? They both die near the end, but I am not exaggerating when I say in the end they magically come back to life. The end felt especially lazy and I did not enjoy the romance aspect at all.

Great! SPOILERS

I bought the book Caraval unaware what it was about. I love the plot and how easy it is to follow. I am a huge fan of Stephanie Garber and her novels and have read the Once Upon a Broken Heart series. I enjoyed the book EXCEPT for the ending. I liked the plot twist,(SPOILERS) but I hated how in the end it turned out all to have been a prank and none of it was real.
