Beautiful fabric and style, but cut large

The velvet fabric and rich color were beautiful, and I loved the classic styling, but this dress was cut unflatteringly wide for me. I'm not as slim as I used to be, and the forgivingness of a heavier, nonclinging fabric like this is therefore good, in theory. But the dress was not form-fitting enough to define my waist, and made me look wider than I am. I bought the size 4, and the shoulders and length were fine, so I didn't want to try a smaller size. I am 5'1" and weigh 125 pounds. On the model in the picture it looks beautiful. On me, not so much.
