tight extra strap

I thought these sandals were purely lace up but when I got them i saw they had a strap across the toes for whatever reason. I have had lace up sandals' laces break so maybe they are for that but it does make them a little tight on the toes. Might take them to be altered but not uncomfortable enough to return. Quilted cushion on the bottom of the foot also thru me off but it was a good cushion.
