Discover the world of the Shadow hunters in the first installment of the internationally bestselling Mortal Instruments series and "prepare to be hooked" (Entertainment Weekly) now with a gorgeous new cover, a map, a new foreword, and exclusive bonus content. City of Bones is a Shadow hunters novel. When fifteen-year-old Clary Fray heads out to the Pandemonium Club in New York City, she hardly expects to witness a murder much less a murder committed by three teenagers covered with strange tattoos and brandishing bizarre weapons. And she's more than a little startled when the body disappears into thin air. Soon Clary is introduced to the world of the Shadow hunters, a secret cadre of warriors dedicated to driving demons out of our world and back to their own. And Clary is introduced with a vengeance, when her mother disappears and Clary herself is almost killed by a grotesque monster. How could a mere human survive such an attack and kill a demon.

The Start of An Amazing Series

I'll be real, the writing is a bit weak as it's one of CCs first ever books. But this book does an incredible job world building and sets you up to embark on years worth of adventures with funny and meaningful characters. The battles are fun, the lore is interesting, and I found myself always wanting to know what happened next.

Eh.

When Clary Fray witnesses a murder at a nightclub that no one else can see, the world she thought she knew unravels, and she discovers the dark, dangerous, and enticing world of shadowhunters. I didn't love or hate this book. It was an okay read with good world building and interesting lore, but I didn't connect with any of the characters. Jace is a stereotypical bad boy who (of course) falls for the innocent, fish out of water, Clary, but their "romance" feels hollow and forced. Things get really weird when incest is thrown in near the end. As a stand-alone novel, this would have been fine, an interesting dip into a world of angels, mute, telepathic munks, and werewolves, but it's not executed well enough to hold my attention for an entire series.

I couldn't put it down!

I read this book over quarantine, and I couldn't believe how well-written it was. It took me roughly 2 days to finish, and I never set it down except to eat and sleep. It definitely deserved its bestseller title, because it is a required read for all fiction lovers.

just do it

I know people are really intimidated to start this series now since there are 20+ books in it, but do yourself a favor and dive into this world. It spans generations and is just an insane ride. Please go meet Jace, Clary, the other shadowhunters, and my absolute favorite man ever, Magnus Bane.
