If it ain't broke...

The Essential Hike jacket seems to be a new version of the Park View Grid fleece jacket. IMO the Park View full-zip Grid Fleece jacket was "essential"--a versatile go-to item for travel. So why did Columbia cheapen up the design of the original by removing the zip side pockets? The functional triple zip-pocket layout of the Park View was what set it apart. It makes me wonder what else has been changed/cheapened in this new version.

Don’t buy-Material is useless-00 durability value

Yes soft and breathable but zero durability. After one week the material started to come un done. Spend a few extra and get the Patagonia. It’s same look and feel and functionality but much more durable.
