Daniel Kane was desperately in need of a job. When he receives a letter requesting him to work as a groundskeeper at Craven Manor, he doesn’t have time to think about it. Daniel had been renting a room from his cousin. He did go without eating while searching for a job. Though his cousin was supposed to allow him food, he didn’t. Life became harder when his cousin suddenly brought home another renter and gave him Daniels bedroom, pushing Daniel out onto the sofa. That pushed Daniel to accept the position offered in the letter. Daniel finds Craven Manor located in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by woods. The house is falling apart, and the grounds need care. He could tell that at one time, it was beautiful. The job includes a caretakers cabin. He is surprised when he is told how generous the salary is, and the cabin has been stocked with anything that he might need. Though the place is desolate, he has hope. He thinks he is alone, but he senses that someone may be living in the tower room. The house is open to him except for that room. He is told from the beginning not to enter it. There are a few other rules. He must be in his cabin before dark with the door locked and the curtains drawn. The first night he wakes to the sound of someone knocking as they circle the cabin. His curiosity gets away from him, and he opens the curtain to look out. He sees something that is disturbing but not disturbing enough for him to pack up and leave. Daniel only stays because he has nowhere else to go. He starts to work in the gardens, and he enjoys it. He likes seeing that he is making a difference. His employer communicates to him with letters left on a mantle in the house. The only other living soul he sees regularly is a black cat. Daniel tries to take care of it, but it avoids him. He hears rumors from the locals in town about the family. There is a crypt on the property for a young girl in the family who had died. He saw her portrait in the manor house. The stories that are told are conflicting. Some say that the mother lost her mind and did unspeakable things. And Daniel feels a dread about the tower room. He feels convinced that someone is living there. This is a well-told gothic haunted house story. The author feeds you enough information to keep wanting more, so it has a slow burn in the beginning. It is worth the read to keep going. It is the first time I have read anything by this author. It did keep me up late for a couple of nights, a perfect read for this October spooky season. I will read more by Darcy Coates. If you love ghost stories and haven’t read this one yet, I recommend it highly. This book was first published on December 11, 2017.

Solid Haunted House Story
This one was just ok for me. I didn't love that the ghosts were trying to befriend the MMC. Also felt like the ending dragged on for an eternity.

Highly recommend this book!
I bought this book 2 days ago, and I'm already finished with it! Absolute page turner, I couldn't put the darn thing down! Darcy Coates absolutely nailed it with this title, and I will definitely be reading more of her books, hoping they're half as good as this one!

So good I can't believe I didn't read it sooner
Listen. I picked up this book because I recommend another book by this author to people, and yet I still hadn't read this one. When I read the back I was like ok I’ll try it. I loved it. So much. I loved Daniel and Bran. The setting was incredible and I won’t lie, I read the scene where Daniel spends his first night in the groundskeeper cottage in my own bed and was creeped out beyond belief. I definitely curled up under the covers and listened very closely to noises outside. The book was great. Atmospheric, well paced. I was torn between believing Bran but then being confused with the new information, just as if I was Daniel. I would have liked more at the end of the book, but it was a satisfying ending.
