Lyrical and lovely but….
3.5 stars for me. This novel was lyrical, lovely, and I do love that it had its roots in eastern mythology. I gave it 3 1/2 stars only because I just don’t remember much of it, very little of the story has remained with me, and I only finished it a few months ago. I know this book is well beloved by so many and I urge those who want to give it a try to definitely pick it up. Personally, though, it wasn’t a story that I would read again.

Can Xingyin save her mother?
Daughter of the Moon Goddess by Sue Lynn Tan is inspired by the Chinese tale of the Moon Goddess and puts a wonderful spin on it. Can Xingyin save her mother? We follow Xingyin from her teenage years, when she leaves her mom behind, to her attempts to find a way to save her. Xingyin Xingyin lived most of her childhood in solitude, unaware of the fact that her existence wasn't known to all the other immortals away from her home. She is a daring young teenage girl who wants to rescue her mom from her banishment, even if she has no clue how to do that quite yet. Xingyin grew up away from her mother, which, in hindsight, helped her discover a great deal about herself. She is good at archery, much like her father, and knows how to use her magic. If she had stayed with her mom, she might not have ever found her true potential. I like Xingyin, and I was rooting for her a lot throughout the book. Her Quest Xingyin has at least two quests throughout the book. Granted, both of the quests are linked together. Xingyin's first quest is the one that she gave herself, which is trying to get her mom out of her banishment. Her second quest is finding these legendary creatures that not even some of the immortals have seen before. Xingyin's quests take her on a journey of not only self-discovery but also realizing who her true friends and allies are. I liked this story a lot. The Romance Xingyin's romantic life isn't put on the back burner while she's doing all of this, since it is the romance part of this romantic fantasy genre. She likes this one guy, and then there is one that she never considered. I have to say that I liked the first guy, even if she isn't too sure if she should like him. Five Stars My rating for Daughter of the Moon Goddess by Sue Lynn Tan is five stars, and I recommend it. It's a great story, even for someone who has never heard of the Chinese legend of the Moon Goddess before. I loved the story and the characters, especially how Xingyin grew throughout it. Thank you for dropping by! I hope you enjoyed this review of Daughter of the Moon Goddess by Sue Lynn Tan. Until the next time, Karen the Baroness

An Adventurous Tale Through Chinese Mythology
This book came highly recommended by someone whose taste I usually trust, but I have to admit, it didn’t quite capture me the way I hoped. I’m leaning toward a solid 3.5, but I’ll round up to 4 for the overall ambition and cultural significance. ✨ What I Loved: 🗡️ Mythological Depth – I genuinely appreciated the incorporation of ancient Chinese mythology. It’s refreshing to see this cultural lens in a genre that often draws from the same familiar Western myths. Representation like this is long overdue and a welcome change. 🎯 Clean YA Appeal – In a world full of YA romances that can feel a bit... intense for younger readers, this book stands out. It avoids the overly dramatic, creature-infested love triangles that can make some recommendations a hard pass for middle and high school students. Instead, it leans into adventure, family, and destiny, making it a solid pick for younger fantasy fans. 🌀 What Didn’t Work for Me: 🕰️ Pacing Issues – I found parts of the story a bit tedious, with some scenes dragging long after I’d already guessed where they were headed. While I understand the need for world-building, there were moments that felt more like filler than plot progression. 📚 Final Take: If you’re looking for a lush, mythology-inspired YA fantasy without the typical over-the-top romance, this is a solid choice. But be prepared for a bit of a slow burn.

Great Interpretation of the Moon Goddess Story
Quotes: “Some scars are carved into our bones—a part of who we are, shaping what we become.” pg. 4 I appreciated the character growth, particularly with our primary female character. The style of writing was flowery but easy to read, and the vivid descriptions let me envision the surroundings, actions, and characters. I appreciated and loved the tenacity and dedication that Xingyin displayed in her efforts to liberate her mother, the Moon Goddess, from isolation. The romance was exciting and at times mysterious, but the back and forth in the love triangle every few seconds was a little tiresome and confusing. I liked how the author incorporated various elements of fairytales and mythology into this book, such as fox spirits and dragons, as it gave the book a fresh and distinct spin. The plot twist surprised me and was well thought out by the author. The battle scenes were enjoyable, but several were overly long or lacked depth. Overall, I appreciated this book's interpretation of the Moon Goddess story, Xingyin's character growth, and her desire to not only save her mother from seclusion but also to achieve her goals in her unique way.

Fell a little short for me
I recognize the appeal of this one, I just personally didn't feel pulled to keep picking it back up. I listened to it on audio and found the names to be confusing, which could have been part of the reason I wasn't grabbing for it. I think it was a good story and very well written, just not what I am personally in the mood for!

An amazing story
This is a very well written story! I loved seeing Xingyin progress throughout the story. Personally, I preferred Wenzhi than Liwei but regardless, I loved Xingyins relationships with both of them before Wenzhi’s betrayal. Can’t wait to read the 2nd book!

Very bland story
There was too much going on in the plot and not enough world building or description about characters’ personalities. The author was just stating what happened. Disappointed
