The New York Times bestselling first book in a dark series that reimagines the Oz saga, from debut author Danielle Paige. Start at the beginning and discover your new series to binge! My name is Amy Gumm—and I'm the other girl from Kansas. I've been recruited by the Revolutionary Order of the Wicked. I've been trained to fight. And I have a mission- Remove the Tin Woodman's heart. Steal the Scarecrow's brain. Take the Lion's courage. And—Dorothy must die. I didn't ask for any of this. I didn't ask to be some kind of hero. But when your whole life gets swept up by a tornado—taking you with it—you have no choice but to go along, you know? Sure, I've read the books. I've seen the movies. I know the song about the rainbow and the happy little blue birds. But I never expected Oz to look like this. To be a place where Good Witches can't be trusted, Wicked Witches may just be the good guys, and winged monkeys can be executed for acts of rebellion. There's still a road of yellow brick—but even that's crumbling. What happened? Dorothy. They say she found a way to come back to Oz. They say she seized power and the power went to her head. And now no one is safe.

Elevated Version of a Classic Story

As a lover of The Wizard of Oz for my entire childhood, this book caught my eye and it did not disappoint. Amy Gumm is a troubled trailer park kid who can never fit in at her high school in Kansas until she is swept away into a magical, yet turned-around land similar to the classic story. Dorothy turned evil, tried to consume all the magic, tortured the munchkins, and punished those who defied her. Amy was brought by the Revolutionary Order of the Wicked to stop her rule and bring peace to what was once a beautiful land. Dorothy Must Die by Danielle Paige far exceeded my expectations and was extremely addictive. The amount of twists and turns continued to make me want to read more and never put the book down. The main character was sarcastic and brought a realness to a story with magical elements. When I bought the book, I was scared that it would be repetitive and similar to the original, but it was far from it. I would recommend this book to anyone who has read the original Wizard of Oz because the villains and background were from the story, so there's a level of understanding and depth to Dorothy Must Die. The way the book is written, I would recommend it to middle schoolers or anyone who loves fictional books with lots of adventure. The plot and dialogue do not leave the reader with questions as everything is spelled out, so it was an easy read. There were some choice words and mature topics in the book, so maturity is needed. The story also ends with a cliffhanger, which forces the reader to have to buy the next book in the series to know what unfolds, and made me very frustrated. Overall, I would give this book a 4 out of 5 stars because there were some cliché aspects that all fairytales have and too much going on at some points that it is hard to keep up. I found myself confused about which character was which and who was dying. On the other hand, I could not put the book down as it was a very well-written story and the concept was very compelling.

So Fun!

I wasn't sure I was going to like this book but it turns out I loved it! It was such a fun story. I loved how the story we all know was changed and we found out more about the characters in the Wizard of Oz. I'm definitely going to read the rest of the books!
