From the author of Steve Jobs and other bestselling biographies, this is the astonishingly intimate story of the most fascinating and controversial innovator of our era—a rule-breaking visionary who helped to lead the world into the era of electric vehicles, private space exploration, and artificial intelligence. Oh, and took over Twitter. When Elon Musk was a kid in South Africa, he was regularly beaten by bullies. One day a group pushed him down some concrete steps and kicked him until his face was a swollen ball of flesh. He was in the hospital for a week. But the physical scars were minor compared to the emotional ones inflicted by his father, an engineer, rogue, and charismatic fantasist. His father's impact on his psyche would linger. He developed into a tough yet vulnerable man-child, prone to abrupt Jekyll-and-Hyde mood swings, with an exceedingly high tolerance for risk, a craving for drama, an epic sense of mission, and a maniacal intensity that was callous and at times destructive. At the beginning of 2022—after a year marked by SpaceX launching thirty-one rockets into orbit, Tesla selling a million cars, and him becoming the richest man on earth—Musk spoke ruefully about his compulsion to stir up dramas. I need to shift my mindset away from being in crisis mode, which it has been for about fourteen years now, or arguably most of my life, he said.

A Biography of Amazing Content That Tends to Drone

While I did thoroughly enjoy reading this book, I couldn't help but think to myself that it tends to drone on, talking about situations that are extremely similar to ones previously discussed. The theme of "Elon, this deadline is impossible to meet!" over and over is what is holding this book from a 5-star rating. While this is 615 pages of content, I believe it would be better suited with 350-450. Walter Isaacson's experience in biography writing really shines through, and the years of work he put in, along with shadowing Elon Musk for those years shows in the depth of detail he provides, down to direct quotes from day-to-day conversations. If you enjoy learning about interesting people, then you will enjoy this biography. I do not believe Isaacson was too political in his writing. You have to expect there to be a good number of political ideals toward the end of the book, but they mostly revolved around Elon's reasoning for purchasing Twitter, which is accurate and should be included. Isaacson did not stretch Musk's political views into any other areas outside of his purchasing of Twitter.

This book is trash and written by a ghost writer. Anything not authentic isn't worth our time.

Driven

I have read a few of Walter Isaacson’s biographies before. The author knows how to create emotions for the subject he is writing about. Currently, there are a lot of strong emotions towards Elon. As for me I see him as a person that is an intriguing person that isn’t afraid to shake and rattle things after reading his biography. I’ve never really dug into what made him who he is today. I’ve read articles about him and looked at some of his projects that he has done. It’s amazing how many people a few years ago just loved him and now the tide has turned into a lot of hate. It’s pretty sad, if you just can put aside the current situations and look at his accomplishments it’s no doubt that Elon is a go- getter, genius, and very driven and knows how to accomplish what he sets out to do. The biography goes through his childhood and being bullied on the playground in South Africa and everything in-between to his rise to the billionaire he is today. He didn’t set out to get rich he figured he’d be really rich or poor. He didn’t get where he is today in a tradition way with schooling either. He walked his own walk and is a driven individual. He took chances and went with his gut. His goal was to change the direction of humanity with the electric car to reduce emissions and rockets to take humanity into a multi-planetary civilization. Not to mention his other endeavors like X and artificial intelligence. His intuition involved billions of dollars, and thousands of workers working long and hard hours. His core people that surrounded him are driven individuals who worked crazy hours. Elon worked alongside them and isn’t afraid to get his hands dirty if needed. His rash personality isn’t for the faint of heart. I gather that his goal isn’t to make relationships but, neither are his core people. If Elon made mistakes, he has the ability to adapt and change strategy quickly. From what I gleaned was that his intuitions are usually spot on. Elon Musk whether you like him or not is an intriguing man from his work to his personal life. I enjoyed the book and it gave me an insight into the man that I didn’t know. I received this complimentary product in exchange for my honest thoughts.

Poorly Sourced Propaganda

This book said less about Musk than it did it’s author. There is no real depth to the writing at all and, at times, I would have to call it trite. The metaphors didn’t metaphor at all, the similes were mangled and the descriptions were obvious/boring. The worst part, however, is how obviously biased the contents are in an effort to portray Musk as an all around good guy (and when he’s not, it’s always daddy’s fault). The biggest “tell” that this is propaganda: Isaacson is an individual with easy access to all the people who could have provided balanced sources, and yet - those sources were absolutely avoided. Big money won’t buy truth - but it will absolutely buy 688 pages of misleading, slanted fluff.

Very thorough -- worth the price

The price of hardbound books seems to be going up faster than general inflation. I did not want to contribute to feeding book inflation, so I was reluctant to pay thirty-five dollars for Walter Isaacson's biography of Elon Musk. However, whether you buy his book or borrow it from a friend or your local library, Musk is worth reading. Isaacson's biography, in tech terms, is "data rich." As a public life, much of Elon Musk's life is common knowledge. Isaacson gives the reader greater detail. Musk is a complicated man and a man many have found hard to work for. Still, Musk has accomplished so many things. He is a Da Vinci of the 21st century. Isaacson needed every one of the book's 615 pages (not including references and index) to tell the life story of Elon Musk.

Enjoyed the book

Reading some of the reviews on this, i would say most naysayers are looking at this from a political point of view rather than the actual person. First, this is the longest book I have read but moved at a good pace. Elon allowed those to see the horrible sides to him, along with the brilliant, driven sides. No doubt, he is a wacky guy, but nobody can deny he is also an incredibly smart, ballsy risk taker. Thoroughly enjoyed the book.

Elon Musk

A fascinating look at a true genius. He is driven to succeed but sometimes his people get in his way. Musk is made of the same stuff that drove Thomas Edison and Henry Ford. Not the easiest guy to work for, but he gets results with admitted mistakes along the way. Anyone that calls this right wing fluff has obviously not read the book. It's author is the former CEO of CNN.
