Experience one of the greatest adventure stories of the modern age in this New York Times bestseller- the harrowing tale of British explorer Ernest Shackleton's 1914 attempt to reach the South Pole. In August 1914, polar explorer Ernest Shackleton boarded the Endurance and set sail for Antarctica, where he planned to cross the last uncharted continent on foot. In January 1915, after battling its way through a thousand miles of pack ice and only a day's sail short of its destination, the Endurance became locked in an island of ice. Thus began the legendary ordeal of Shackleton and his crew of twenty-seven men. When their ship was finally crushed between two ice floes, they attempted a near-impossible journey over 850 miles of the South Atlantic's heaviest seas to the closest outpost of civilization. In Endurance, the definitive account of Ernest Shackleton's fateful trip, Alfred Lansing brilliantly narrates the harrowing and miraculous voyage that has defined heroism for the modern age.

An inspiring story

I’ve discovered I love reading true survival stories, and since I hadn’t read one in a few months, I decided it was about time for another one. Once I got into this story, I realized I really knew nothing about Shackleton’s expedition, so the history side of things was extra-interesting to me! It’s a miracle these men survived. I could hardly believe my ears as the story was told—they had so many hurdles to face as they tried to get back out to civilization! The way the story was told, I felt like I was there—shivering in a tent as a storm blew over, hoping the hunting party would find something to kill so they’d have something to eat, or hoping against hope, with the men left behind, that Shackleton and his tiny crew would somehow find an island out in the South Atlantic, far from any other shore or hope of rescue. Lansing does a spectacular job of telling this story. It reads like a novel, and it definitely kept my attention the whole way through! I came away with a great respect for Shackleton and his men’s grit and determination, and a deeper appreciation for the sacrifices they made to help us know this world we live in better. A truly inspiring story.

Epic - and nothing short of it

I have read historical nonfictions about humans being pushed to the limit (In the Kingdom of Ice; Unbroken; Flyboys; The Blood of Heroes), but this story is something else. I don't think anybody lived a life like Shackleton did. It approaches a level so intense that I remember feeling like the events in this book were happening on another planet. If you're new to the survival / human limits genre, absolutely give this one a shot! It'll inspire you.
