OPRAH'S BOOK CLUB PICK • A HARPERS BAZAAR BEST BOOK OF 2022 • A PARADE MOST ANTICIPATED BOOK • A MARIE CLAIRE MOST ANTICIPATED BOOK"It's clear from the first page that Davis is going to serve a more intimate, unpolished account than is typical of the average (often ghost-written) celebrity memoir; Finding Me reads like Davis is sitting you down for a one-on-one conversation about her life, warts and all."-USA Today"[A] fulfilling narrative of struggle and success…. Her gorgeous storytelling will inspire anyone wishing to shed old labels."-Los Angeles TimesIn my book, you will meet a little girl named Viola who ran from her past until she made a life-changing decision to stop running forever. This is my story, from a crumbling apartment in Central Falls, Rhode Island, to the stage in New York City, and beyond. This is the path I took to finding my purpose but also my voice in a world that didn't always see me. As I wrote Finding Me, my eyes were open to the truth of how our stories are often not given close examination. We are forced to reinvent them to fit into a crazy, competitive, judgmental world. So I wrote this for anyone running through life untethered, desperate and clawing their way through murky memories, trying to get to some form of self-love.

Intense, engaging audiobook

Read by the author, this was an intense but ultimately hopeful memoir, chronicling childhood poverty and abuse, her acting career, and personal relationships. I was consistently interested and emotionally engaged. Note: This is explicit from the opening line, which guided where and how I listened.

Good read

Viola Davis telling stories of her life and career. I enjoyed this book. I liked the look into her childhood. I appreciated her sister's, Dianne, words to her. I liked how she and most of her siblings made it out of poverty and addictions. When she talks about going to college and beginning her career, it was no easier than her childhood had been. I was glad that her mentors were there to help her. I liked that she had people to ask her the hard questions and to let her know that what she was taught in childhood was not true. I could identify with some of her lessons. I could also identify with her words as she begins to heal from the trauma of her childhood. I was glad I read this. Everyone should as it brings home truths we too often deny.

True Grit!

This book was amazing...ly tough to read. She lives HER life, speaks HER truth. She is grateful, smart, committed to truth over power, has lived through horrible poverty and abuse, yet she sees the quality of life, again lived on her terms. She is AMAZING! A great read. Buy IT!!

Inspiring

I almost shelved this book because the first few chapters were intense and triggering to say the least but I’m glad I kept reading. Truly an amazing book and an eye opener.

A Must

I have no words. Viola is an incredible woman. Her strength and resilience, her PERSISTENCE, is hero-status. Viola speaks about what it takes to be a hero, and she embodies the definition with everything she has and continues to endure and plow through. I could listen and learn from her forever. This book is a must read or better yet, a must listen.

Inspiring, raw and phenomenal.

A very well-written, engaging, and inspiring story for both men and women. It causes readers to dig deep inside themselves to discover what inspires and holds them back. It is a great tool to cause deep self-reflection.
