Winner of both the Hugo and Nebula Awards, the powerful, classic story about a man who receives an operation that turns him into a genius. . . and introduces him to heartache. Charlie Gordon is about to embark upon an unprecedented journey. Born with an unusually low IQ, he has been chosen as the perfect subject for an experimental surgery that researchers hope will increase his intelligence-a procedure that has already been highly successful when tested on a lab mouse named Algernon. As the treatment takes effect, Charlie's intelligence expands until it surpasses that of the doctors who engineered his metamorphosis. The experiment appears to be a scientific breakthrough of paramount importance, until Algernon suddenly deteriorates. Will the same happen to Charlie?

Heart wrenching

I bought this a year ago to lend to a friend who wanted to re read the book. I started reading it yesterday and finished it today. It's a book that makes you look from the perspective of our protagonist Charlie through his written entries, and I feel like this was such a clever way to peer into him and his story. It's a heavy read in terms of emotions and is a nice analytical read. I recommend this book.

Review for Flowers for Algernon

When I first read this book, I thought it was a story about a mouse. After I finished reading the book, I was almost in tears after reading a story about a thirty two year old man’s life. This book is about Charlie, who at thirty two years old has an IQ of 68. He was born with phenylketonuria, and has neurosurgery performed to raise his IQ and temporarily reverse the effects of his disability. The experience I had while reading this book was like no other. The only way to describe it would be like actively watching someone else's life, because that’s how amazing this book is. I liked that I could feel the emotions that Charlie, the protagonist, was feeling throughout the book. Daniel Keyes writes in the first person perspective which gives the storyline more power. Not only does this science fiction novel portray the abuse of the mentally and intellectually disabled, it touches on the subjects of romance difficulties, childhood trauma, human nature, and the effects of family bonds. This book changed my perspective and opened my eyes. I truly feel like this book is for everyone to read because it’s a learning experience and a good story all in one. It discusses topics that might be uncomfortable or not often brought up, which I like.

Okay, but not worth it

Where to start. I had such high hopes with this book. I don't usually read sci-fi but thought the concept was so interesting. I read it, and I was left disappointed. I liked Charlie's story and all, but the other characters were under-developed and uninteresting. Even Charlie's love interests were just bland. It got better towards the end, but at that point I was feeling a bit down about the book. Love the concept, don't love the execution. I wouldn't recommend.
