The second book in Lois Lowry's Giver Quartet, which began with the bestselling and Newbery Medal-winning The Giver. Left orphaned and physically flawed in a civilization that shuns and discards the weak, Kira faces a frighteningly uncertain future. Her neighbors are hostile and no one but a small boy offers to help. When she is summoned to judgment by The Council of Guardians, Kira prepares to fight for her life. But the Council, to her surprise, has plans for her. Blessed with an almost magical talent that keeps her alive, the young girl faces new responsibilities and a set of mysteries deep within the only world she has ever known. On her quest for truth, Kira discovers things that will change her life and world forever. A compelling examination of a future society, Gathering Blue challenges readers to think about community, creativity and the values that they have learned to accept. Once again Lois Lowry brings readers on a provocative journey that inspires contemplation long after the last page is turned. "This extraordinary novel is remarkable for its fully realized characters, gripping plot and Lowry's singular vision of a future". VOYAThe Giver has become one of the most influential novels of our time. Don't miss the powerful companion novels in Lois Lowry's Giver Quartet- Gathering Blue, Messenger and Son.

Follows The Giver

5 Stars for Gathering Blue by Lois Lowry. Book 2 in The Giver series, this one did not disappoint. It was different enough from The Giver with many of the same themes and @loislowrywriter painted the characters with a fine-haired brush. Intricately done, with poised and deliberate attention to details, Gathering Blue caused me to slow down and look around in my own life, as I did with The Giver. Even though Gathering Blue is meant to be book 2 in the series, it could be read as a standalone novel. But, it's obvious now that despite each book having their own ups and downs, there is a more sinister rumbling going on, ominous and foreboding. Needless to say, I'm excited to dive into Book 3. This series is different from anything I've ever read. It's refreshing and the details are written so intentionally, it's easy to get sucked in quickly. It's also a much needed reminder for humanity of our great responsibility to each other, our connectedness, and our ability to see the light and sometimes dark in others. I love the broken characters. And, their individual triumphs and relationships. A great read! #5stars #bookreview #highlyrecommend #nextseries #loislowry #gatheringblue #readgoodbooks #underrated #symbolicread #greatfiction

Interesting take on dystopian genre

Set in the same universe as The Giver, Lois Lowry gives us another window into society’s future, but besides the similarity between the two books, Gathering Blue works in its own way to deliver a powerful message about the worst in human nature. Starting off the setting in a small village full of vibrancy and color on the outside is actually revealed to being something more sinister and full of darkness and hatred on the inside, the book is filled with twists like these which add variance to the book and make it interesting to read. The book tells the story of Kira, an orphaned and crippled girl who is deemed useless and out of place in her society, it follows her story and her struggle and the writing really allows you to put yourself in her shoes, even if you don't have a disability. The storytelling makes the world seem so much larger than it is and the different character interactions let you know what the people of this society are like. The book is an interesting take on the common dystopian future archetype and is definitely not boring to read like some books of the genre that are long and tedious, the writing will leave you feeling like you are actually there. Telling the message about being excluded from society, the story follows Kira’s attempts to fit in and cope with the lack of sympathy by using her gift of weaving to her advantage. Unlike the Giver which centers around a society devoid of color, this society is full of diversity of colors, but not a diversity of people. Society embraces diversity but only when diversity helps society. This book proves to be a warning sign to our current society and the writing keeps the book fresh and interesting while still providing the message in a clear way.
