#1 New York Times Bestseller. Diana Gabaldon returns with the and vast and sweeping and (The Washington Post) new novel in the epic Outlander series. War leaves nobody alone. Neither the past, the present, nor the future offers true safety, and the only refuge is what you can protect- your family, your friends, your home. Jamie Fraser and Claire Randall were torn apart by the Jacobite Rising in 1746, and it took them twenty years of loss and heartbreak to find each other again. Now it's 1779, and Claire and Jamie are finally reunited with their daughter, Brianna, her husband, Roger, and their children, and are rebuilding their home on Fraser's Ridgea fortress that may shelter them against the winds of war as well as weather. But tensions in the Colonies are great- Battles rage from New York to Georgia and, even in the mountains of the backcountry, feelings run hot enough to boil Hell's teakettle. Jamie knows that loyalties among his tenants are split and it won't be long before the war is on his doorstep. Brianna and Roger have their own worry- that the dangers that provoked their escape from the twentieth century might catch up to them. Sometimes they question whether risking the perils of the 1700 among them disease, starvation, and an impending war was indeed the safer choice for their family.

Another Satisfying "Big" Book from Diana Gabaldon

I had this newest "big" "Outlander" series book ordered for delivery as soon as it came out at Thanksgiving, 2021. Why have I just now read it? I read too many comments on a fan site, which didn't allow spoilers for the first six months, but the comments seemed to feel that Ms Gabaldon had written a lot of lovely scenes but there wasn't much action. It sounded like there was a bunch about William, who honestly isn't my favorite character. However, I actually thoroughly enjoyed all 902 pages of it! I found a nice balance of lovely scenes to action scenes, and really enjoyed the through-line of Claire's new bee hives brought to her at the beginning of the book and which give the book its title. There's plenty of Jamie and Claire (never enough, though) w/ Jamie fighting in yet another battle in which he doesn't want to actually fight; lots of Roger and Bree; and I wasn't nearly as annoyed by William's plot line as I thought I would be, b/c William's plot line also featured Lord John Grey, my absolute favorite secondary character in Gabaldon's books. "Bees..." also sets us up w/ plenty of mystery to be solved in Big Book #10 - whenever that will be written - w/ danger coming from Roger and Bree's "present-day" (1980ish) plot line. I plan to re-read it again soon, to pick up nuances I missed from the first reading. 5 out of 5 stars, enthusiastically.

But you're not gone!

The author's obsession with Lord John Grey is distracting and interrupts the narrative about Jamie and Claire's family and the happenings on Fraser's Ridge.

Disappointing book!

After waiting seven years for this book to be written, I found it disappointing. I have read all of Diana Gabaldon‘s books several times. I was eagerly awaiting book 9. However, book 9 was filled with many extraneous characters that had little or no bearing on the plot, and little information about time travel that she hinted in book 8. I don’t want to reveal the end of this book, but sadly Ms. Gabaldon left us hanging in the last chapter. I feel sad in saying that this book was a waste of 49 hours of listening.

I bought this book three weeks ago and stopped reading it after six chapters. Worst book I've ever read bar none.

Excellent

Enjoyed this well written book as one of her best. We have come a long way from early Scotland to the beautiful mountains of North Carolina. The first part of book moved at a slower pace but i found it all very interesting and enjoyable reading. Agree there were a lot of new characters introduced and you had to keep your wits about you to keep them straight. Look forward to the next book and hope it begins where this one left off and doesnt take 7 years.

Love this series and style of writing.

I’ve read the entire series more times than I care to admit. This last book is definitely a continuation of the lives of the people we’ve grown to love. I’ve read some of the reviews. In order to understand everything, you must read the series from the beginning. And frankly, just watching the series won’t work. They’re very few new characters introduced in this book. Jamie and Clair continue to love each other and take care of their people. Some things are coming full circle. Looking forward to book 10.

Slow read

Oh Diana. The transition from book 8 to 9 is disconnected. After reading about 180 pages and not knowing several characters, I stopped reading #9 and read #8 again. I thought I missed meeting some new characters that may have been introduced in #8. But that was not the case. I am sure you meant to introduce new people to extend the story lines. But waiting sooooo long for this book and be sooooo disappointed…. Well, not sure I will read future volumes. I do like your writing style, but this book just does not cut it for me.
