I had really high expectations for this book. I like Matthew McConaughey. He’s been in some really good and quirky movies, TV’s series, and he’s always a blast in commercials. That said – this book – what the heck is it? One of the screwiest darn things I’ve ever read. I flew through it because there’s not much to it. A bunch of random statements, nonsensical sentences, bumper stickers and other fluff thrown in with a bunch of stories about his life. I was honestly surprised by the lack of what I would consider a real memoir. There are some very comical and entertaining stories once the book gets along. So many glowing reviews from famous people as well as the public. I don’t get it. I wish I hadn’t read it. I liked Matthew much better before I picked this up. He’s way too hung up on himself. I spent $6.95 on it at a discount bookstore, and I still feel like I got ripped off.

An Un-traditional Memoir
"Greenlights" is not a typical memoir, and for me that comes with good pieces and bad. I enjoyed the extra insights he gives that you might not hear in a run-of-the-mill story telling memoir, but too much of the content is what I see as ramblings in the form of poetry that I ended up skipping a lot of. Overall, I see this as a good piece of insight into one of the most memorable actors of my time but could do without the never-ending poetry slams.

Exceeded All Expectations
I’m not one to turn to celebrity memoirs but as McConaughey says (in a much saucier and more rhythmic manner) in the intro, this book is much more than that. Yes, he recounts life anecdotes, but they serve to inform the life lessons he’s sharing with us. Let’s just say this book was a greenlight.

Title: Greenlights Author: Matthew McConaughey Release Date: October 20th, 2020 Page Count: 288 Format: Audiobook Start Date: June 19th, 2022 Finish Date: June 26th, 2022 Rating: 5 Stars Review: I really love books like these. You get to know the person better. It humanizes the celebrity. I think that's really needed. I would have never thought that he could have had a rough life. It's so easy to forget that they lived normal lives before they became successful. He narrated the book himself. Which was also nice. I'm not really sure what else to say about this book. I feel like I'd like to go back and actually read it one day. I'd like to get a physical copy for myself to have on my shelf. I definitely have a lot of respect for McConaughey. He's one of the celebrities I'd be happy to meet one time. I think he'd be very nice.

I purchased the book and read through it, thoroughly enjoyed it. Went back and purchased the Audiobook read by Matthew himself, far better. Do yourself a favor and read this.
