Hallowe'en Party (Hercule Poirot Series) by Agatha Christie

Hercule Poirot remains one of my favorite detectives. Yes, he is very self-absorbed, but he delivers the goods in the end. This story features the murder of a thirteen-year old girl. Why? The girl, Joyce Reynolds, claims to have witnessed a murder. Poor Joyce seals her fate with this boastful claim. Agatha Christie must insert other tidbits to heighten the suspense of the story: forgery, scenic gardens, disappearance of an individual. So many characters and the harsh and breath-taking landscape. The list of potential murderers grows, but Poirot eliminates many from the list and skillfully finds the killer. A fun tale of a scary holiday.

A Hercule Poirot Mystery
"Hallowe'en Party": A Hercule Poirot Mystery #41 by Agatha Christie is the Story, A Haunting in Venice is the Film Adaption! A Halloween Party that turns deadly... During preparations for an 'eleven plus' teenage Halloween party, thirteen-year-old Joyce Reynolds brags about once witnessing a murder. Known to be a bit of a fibber liar storyteller, no one believes her, causing her to stomp out and run home. Later that day, after most of the party festivities are complete, Joyce is nowhere to be found. Her body is eventually discovered in the library where the apple bobbing took place. Someone held her head down long enough in the galvanized bucket full of water to drown her. Ariadne Oliver, the well-known crime novelist, was at the party and highly distraught about poor little Joyce. She calls upon her good friend Hercule Poirot to investigate and discover who's responsible for this murder in a quiet English village... "Hallowe'en Party" is the perfectly themed Agatha Christie Mystery to listen to in October and is one of the last Poirot stories Christie wrote. It feels dated and a bit old-fashion considering the year it was published in. 1969, when Modern was a buzz word, this story has words such as Authoress, Disappearess, and Jollification. Yep, that feels like a bit of a time-warp, I'd say. Despite this, Christie's story weaves together relationships, past events, and possible motives as her most famous character, Hercule Poirot observes, discovers secrets, gathers facts, eliminates suspects one by one, and ultimately, in true "Poirot Fashion", miraculously uncovers the truth. Voilà! "Hallowe'en Party" audiobook narrator Hugh Fraser does a remarkable job of voicing and bringing Hercule Poirot to life. This was my first HP investigation and an entertaining introduction to this character that I can recommend to all who love an Agatha Christie Mystery! 3.75⭐rounded up!

Drowned in the Apple Bobbing Tub
Poirot is called to a small British village after a tragedy at a Hallowe’en party takes place. Someone used the tub that the guests had bobbed for apples in to drown Joyce, a thirteen year old girl who was helping with the event. Earlier in the evening, she had bragged that she had witnessed a murder, however the residents of the village didn’t take her seriously since she was always embellishing if not outright lying about things. If that wasn’t the motive, what happened to her? Yes, I picked this particular book to read this year because of the upcoming movie “inspired” by it. I suspect the movie will be vastly different, but we will see. The book originally came out in 1969, and you can tell with some of the theories that Poirot hears about what happened. It was interesting to see how society was thinking about some of these issues back then. My biggest issue was the victim’s age, it’s just not something I’m used to. However, I was drawn into the story, interested in finding out exactly what happened. The characters could have been a little sharper, but they did help make me care about the story. I was on the right track, but didn’t have everything pieced together when we reached the climax, which was pretty thrilling. It’s easy to see why this is a lesser-known book from Agatha Christie, but it is definitely enjoyable.
