A captivating and powerful exploration of the opioid crisis - the deadliest drug epidemic in American history - through the eyes of a college-bound softball star. Edgar Award-winning author Mindy McGinnis delivers a visceral and necessary novel about addiction, family, friendship, and hope. When a car crash sidelines Mickey just before softball season, she has to find a way to hold on to her spot as the catcher for a team expected to make a historic tournament run. Behind the plate is the only place she's ever felt comfortable, and the painkillers she's been prescribed can help her get there. The pills do more than take away pain, they make her feel good. With a new circle of friends - fellow injured athletes, others with just time to kill - Mickey finds peaceful acceptance, and people with whom words come easily, even if it is just the pills loosening her tongue. But as the pressure to be Mickey Catalan heightens, her need increases, and it becomes less about pain and more about want, something that could send her spiraling out of control.

Great Plot!

I began reading this book a month ago, and from the beginning, it set a tone of intense mood. When Mickey gets in the car crash, her life spirals from there on out, from her softball, to her close friends, she takes a wrong turn in life all because of her painkiller addiction. This book had many ups but far more downs, which made it very sad for me. Especially when she bought drugs from the elderly women because she was selling cheap compared to her main guy and her and her friends all took it, and they all overdosed except her. These events caused a huge turn for her softball performance and it is displayed throughout the book. Luckily, after her mom finds out about her addiction she is able to get help from a family member that went through the same experiences as her and was able to get her back on the right path. This book was a great read and I would recommend this to anyone who wants a drama-filled story filled with traumatic experiences that will keep your eyes glued to the page. I was very satisfied when I finished Mickey's Story but it reminded me of people that are struggling as of now and it made me open my eyes to see what resources we have to help these people. I also realized many of these people who become addicted are good however they just need to find the right direction.

A hard-hitter

This book was heavy but wonderful. Watching Mickey repeatedly distance herself from her actions and, at the end of the novel, accepting that she is an addict was heartbreaking. The ending hit me like a truck, yet it felt hopeful. However, I believe that the part that begins with finding the bodies (not a spoiler, foreshadowed on the first page) to the ending could've been expanded. The ending was super fast-paced compared to the relatively average pace of the rest of the novel. While Mickey was in a whirlpool full of consequences and results it felt like she was an outsider looking into her own life. I would've appreciated the ending more if the 50 pages spent on it were expanded to 80 or so. Heroine leaves the readers with several “what could've been's” if Mickey didn't become an addict, but concomitantly leaves us with even more “what will/can be's.” I considerably enjoyed and appreciated this novel, and I predict I'll still be thinking about Mickey's universe for the next several weeks.

Amazing Yet Somewhat Hard Read

I got this book a little over a year ago and it's still so fresh in my mind. It is honestly one of my favorites. The book does talk about drug addiction so to any who is sensitive to that topic, read with caution. This book made did make me cry due to certain events envolving the main characters love life and her softball time. I was a little apprehensive to reading this book when I read over the discription and what not because I am for sure on the younger side, I purchased this book when I was 12 turning 13 so as a barely teenager this book does talk about things that are somewhat mature for my age but I gave it a try anyways since i've always had teachers tell me that books like these are great for my reading level, and I do not regret reading this book. Overall, it gave great discriptions on how the main character was feeling when she was anxious for more drugs and how it just changed her whole life.

Hard Hitting Great Book

This was such a hard hitting book. I cringed and cried and got mad at the main character. I wanted to shake her. The author did such an amazing job putting you in the story. Trigger warning for those with addiction issues, but I would recommend this.

Great read

I really loved the perspective of this book. It was realistic I felt & really engages me and captivated me. I became really involved with the main character and I really enjoyed that it didn’t just center on the drug itself, but really gave a look at the relationships and friendships of the main character and how they fluctuated as the story went on. Great book, I read it in about two days. Highly suggest.
