Holly Gibney, one of Stephen King's most compelling and ingeniously resourceful characters, returns in this thrilling novel to solve the gruesome truth behind multiple disappearances in a midwestern town. Sometimes the universe throws you a rope. —BILL HODGES Stephen King's Holly marks the triumphant return of beloved King character Holly Gibney. Readers have witnessed Holly's gradual transformation from a shy (but also brave and ethical) recluse in Mr. Mercedes to Bill Hodges's partner in Finders Keepers to a full-fledged, smart, and occasionally tough private detective in The Outsider. In King's new novel, Holly is on her own, and up against a pair of unimaginably depraved and brilliantly disguised adversaries. When Penny Dahl calls the Finders Keepers detective agency hoping for help locating her missing daughter, Holly is reluctant to accept the case. Her partner, Pete, has Covid. Her (very complicated) mother has just died. And Holly is meant to be on leave. But something in Penny Dahl's desperate voice makes it impossible for Holly to turn her down. Mere blocks from where Bonnie Dahl disappeared live Professors Rodney and Emily Harris. They are the picture of bourgeois respectability- married octogenarians, devoted to each other, and semi-retired lifelong academics.

Yes Holly suffers from being in her own head

Bad reviews are people who didn’t expect Holly to have so many internal thoughts about our real world. Or those who don’t want reality to mix with fiction if it’s not fantastical or romantic. Holly depicts many of the things we all had to endure and she does it with all the quirks we humans have- like being obsessed with Covid but chain smoking- it’s called being relatable! If you’re judging her for it then King has succeeded again. Be honest with yourselves and you’ll find similar behaviors. A great book on the human condition of being obsessed with things we can’t control and not changing the things we can. Thank you Stephen King for again showing the sides we hide from.

Welcome Back Holly!

Holly is still a partner in Finders Keepers, a private investigation company that she shared with her close friend, Bill Hodges, during the Mercedes Killings. Holly is reeling from the death of her mother, but when Penny Dahl calls her for help finding her missing daughter, Holly cannot refuse. This begins a dangerous and exciting investigation that reveals a pair of serial killers who kill for an unbelievable reason. Holly puts her life on the line to find them. Holly was one of my favorite characters in The Mercedes Killer trilogy, and I was so excited to read about her again. Stephen King did not disappoint. This story is another one filled with horror, bravery, and friendship. And Holly is still her quirky, brave, wonderful self!

The ending should have been better

Huge S.K. fan, but I was looking for a twist toward the end of this compelling novel about a detective who investigates the mysterious disappearances of several individuals near a college campus. I thought Jerome (Brother of Barbara) played a role in the disappearances based on his nuanced curiosities. That wasn't quite clear but should have been defined more in the final chapters to give it a twist. At the end, Holly finds more than she bargains for and without giving away too much, the story will keep you on edge as the mystery becomes clear. Overall though, good read.

Disappointing

I have been a long time fan of Stephen King’s books and after this book, I unfortunately feel that this is where mr road ends with his books. It is disappointing because he spent the majority of the time talking about politics and using this as a platform for himself. I wish it was going to be an actual fiction story with great suspense, but it was the most basic, boring plot. I read fiction to stay away from political and real world comments, so I felt tricked. I rarely have a hard time putting down one of his books but this one was extremely difficult to force my way through to the end. It could have really been a great story, so I am disappointed. I wish I never bought it.

Love Holly

So glad for more Holly. It's not like Stephen King to keep a character going but so glad he did. I was thrilled to see her pop into the Outsider. Amazing character development, a bit gory and suspenseful. A great read.

Macabre

'Holly' by Stephen King follows Holly Gibney as she becomes involved in a series of disappearances that culminate in an unimaginable discovery. The conclusion that Holly eventually arrives at is preposterous but, as always, Stephen King writes in such a manner that I found myself googling facts to see if they could possibly be true. Like several of Stephen King's other works, the basic premise of this book will stay with me. 'Holly', the book, is not a continuation of the Bill Hodges Trilogy but does refer extensively to characters and events in that trilogy. However, background information is always provided so that you still fully understand the characters and references even if you haven't read that trilogy. I give 'Holly' four stars because it is an engaging story. However, it has many characters and the plot is tightly woven so sometimes it is hard to keep up with all the details. As always Stephen King is a YES!

Good, not great

I’ve a long time Stephen King fan of his horror. His thriller books are more hit and miss. Holly is one of these that is okay, not really sensational. While King's signature style is present, with vivid descriptions and engaging characters, the overall execution falls short of his usual standards. Good points: Very atmospheric. Suspenseful, ratcheting up the tension with each turn of the page. It’s well-written, with political overtures, written during COVID. The character development in "Holly" feels lacking (unless you count the overly-dominant OCD for germs), with many of the secondary characters feeling one-dimensional and thinly sketched. Even the protagonist, Holly Gibney, fails to fully engage readers, with her motivations and actions often feeling contrived and unconvincing. Lots of other pros and cons, but at the end, it is Stephen King, and even a mediocre novel by him is still a well written and enjoyable journey. 3.5 out of 5 stars.
