Home Front: A Novel by Kristin Hannah
"Home Front is Hannah's crowning achievement." - The Huffington Post In this powerhouse of a novel, Kristin Hannah explores the intimate landscape of a troubled marriage with this provocative and timely portrait of a husband and wife, in love and at war. All marriages have a breaking point. All families have wounds. All wars have a cost. . . .Like many couples, Michael and Jolene Zarkades have to face the pressures of everyday life - children, careers, bills, chores - even as their twelve-year marriage is falling apart. Then a deployment sends Jolene deep into harm's way and leaves defense attorney Michael at home, unaccustomed to being a single parent to their two girls. As a mother, it agonizes Jolene to leave her family, but as a solider, she has always understood the true meaning of duty. In her letters home, she paints a rose-colored version of her life on the front lines, shielding her family from the truth. But war will change Jolene in ways that none of them could have foreseen. When tragedy strikes, Michael must face his darkest fear and fight a battle of his own - for everything that matters to his family. At once a profoundly honest look at modern marriage and a dramatic exploration of the toll war takes on an ordinary American family, Home Front is a story of love, loss, heroism, honor, and ultimately, hope. "Hannah has written a remarkable tale of duty, love, strength.

Repetitive
This book was ok to read. It was respective to make it longer. I was annoyed at parts of it. What 4 year old child, almost 5 asks to play "patty cake"??" It was mentioned numerous times. Also, the screaming, shrieking 12 year old with the snotty mouth. That got tiring very quickly.

Everyday marriage in extraordinary circumstances.
For me, Kristin Hannah’s skill at bringing her character’s internal emotions and external actions together is seamless storytelling. The result makes the complex appear simple, for Hannah typically creates an intimacy with each of her characters and we readers participate in the joys, struggles, crushing sadness, beautiful reconciliations her characters experience. Homefront is no exception. The story centers on a marriage, brought nearly to a breaking point when Jolene, an Army helicopter pilot and officer is called to Iran. Her husband, attorney Michael, is left behind to father their two girls. The stress, growth and tragedy of war lands in this family’s lap when Jolene is injured. Similar to Jodi Picoult, Hannah brings to life everyday families dealing with extraordinary circumstances. This story ends with hope. Repost of review on Goodreads.

Realistic portrayal of a military family
This story is a thoroughly realistic portrayal of the pressures military service brings on families. I’m this case the wife and Mom is deployed to Iraq, leaving her self absorbed husband in charge of raising two young daughters by himself. The wife, of course is conflicted by her sense of duty to her country and her responsibilities as a wife and mother. Tragedy befalls her tour further testing her role at home and the role each family member must play in the healing. This book makes you so cognizant of what military families sacrifice for the rest of us.
