I really enjoyed this one!
Much thanks to #NetGalley, and the publisher for am advance review copy if House of Shadows by Darcy Coates. I really enjoyed reading this book and I am definitely looking forward to reading more by the author. Basically, the book is about Sophie, who is thrust into a marriage with Mr. Argenton after her wealthy father basically loses everything in a business deal gone sour. In order go keep her family from becoming destitute, Mr. Argenton offers to restore their wealth in exchange for Sophie's hand in marriage. Sophie accepts the offer because sure cannot bear go we her family suffer. What she doesn't know it's that by accepting the proposal she will basically be trapped inside her husbands estate for the rest of his life. What I liked about the book was the mystery surrounding the Northwoods Estate. I also really enjoyed how Sophie's relationship with Mr. Argenton progresses. Also the family dynamics were very interesting, especially the "evil" Aunt Rose. What frustrated me to no end was the fact that Sophie continually allowed the aunt to bully her without ever even mentioning it to her husband. I would recommend this book to readers who enjoy a good, clean romance immersed in the supernatural. I will definitely be watching this author from now on.

Addicting, Atmospheric, and Cohesive Gothic Thrill
I read this book a while ago and I still cannot stop thinking about it. Rarely does a book creep me out so much, but this one did. Rarely do I find myself rooting for the couple, in this one I found the romance enthralling. Definitely recommend this to people who were disappointed by some of their recent mystery/romance reads and what to read something to spice up their next read!

Impossible to put down this Gothic Suspense!
Twenty-year old Sophie lives a comfortable life of wealth with her family. The family is looked after, and her brother is enrolled in an expensive private school. But everything changes when a boat full of silks for the family's merchant business smashes on the rocks at sea. Her family lost everything, and to save her family she is given an offer. Marry the handsome, but odd Joseph and move into his home, or watch her family become destitute. After her marriage to Joesph, she rides to the family home in his carriage and starts to understand that something is not quite right about the eerie house in the woods. Even the horses when approaching the house will not come too close...but why? Even odder is Joseph's Aunt Rose who will stop at nothing to treat Sophie badly and keep her away from Joseph. And then she begins to believe that something is in the house with her. And the presence may be dark, with sharp teeth, and it may be after her. I absolutely loved this dark gothic thriller, and had a difficult time putting it down. The descriptions of the house, the odd happenings and the woods kept me on the edge of my seat. And the budding romance between her and the dark handsome Joseph was nice as well. I definitely recommend this thriller, and plan to pick up the second in the series once it's available.

Good and quick gothic read, but a bit cliche.
** Disclaimer: I received a copy of this novel from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. * 3.5 stars. This was an interesting and super fast read that felt something like a pulp novel and fits perfectly in the genre of gothic romance. The characters are reminiscent of a 19th century novel and the atmosphere made it feel something akin to Daphne du Maurier's Rebecca in some ways. For me, this balanced somewhere between a serious horror and a satire, as things were often over the top. There were also a lot of classic horror tropes rolled into the narrative, which I think made it even more enjoyable. However, this neared a 4 star read for me, but didn't quite make it there just because it did feel a little too cliche in some ways. The ending was good, but does end on a bit of a cliffhanger. This was a bit frustrating. However, I had a good time reading the book and felt it kept my attention incredibly well, so I will be seeking out the sequel.

Fun gothic diversion
I picked this up on a whim because it had a description that grabbed my attention: Sophie’s family is suddenly bankrupted by a disaster, and a wealthy stranger offers to fix everything if she agrees to be his wife. Soon, Sophie is whisked away to Northwood, her new husband’s vast, desolate mansion deep in the wilderness, where her new in-laws are cold and distant, her husband is keeping secrets, and the house and surrounding grounds are full of terrors. This sounded to me like good, gothic romance fun, and I’m pleased to report that it definitely is. With its easy, accessible writing and well-executed elements of classic horror and ghost stories, House of Shadows was just the sort of page-turner I needed. While not at all a character-driven story, I still really enjoyed Sophie as our heroine, and the sweet progression of her relationship with her new husband, Joseph, was a nice backdrop to all the creepy goings-on in the house. The descriptions of the house and grounds are on point, and the novel comes together like an old-fashioned gothic ghost story culminating in a satisfying ending. But wait! The epilogue sets us up for book 2… and I’m looking forward to visiting The Argenton’s again very soon. This isn’t serious literature, and it won’t hurt your head or heart to read it. I recommend to anyone who likes a bit of spooky historical fiction gothic diversion. 3 1/2 stars
