I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter by Erika L. SaáNchez

First, it's not ALL bad. There's funny moments that genuinely made me exhale through the nose giggle, like when she was talking about the boys she was meeting who weren't her type. And it can be relatable since its a "coming of age" book, but God, it just keeps missing. The way Sanchez writes about self harm, suicide, and wards makes it sound like some kind of unrealistic fairy tale. How the main character comes across when describing what she goes through puts a soft light on something that's extremely harmful and not at all cathartic. And in all honesty, its gross. It's so past the line of "needing the details to tell the story in a funny and relatable way for the 'young adults' reading my book!" it goes straight to, "I need to dramatize this to make my audience uncomfortable." A 'young adult' reading this isn't going to know what Sanchez is talking about, like non-consensual touching and borderline pedophilia. And this isn't a good book for them to learn it from.

A Beautiful Message
The author does an outstanding job describing what it's like to grow up in a Latino household. There were plenty of experiences the main character went through that many other members of the Latino community can personally relate to. As well as other adversities other teenagers face. The book makes you go through a roller coaster of emotions and invested as to what's to come. I highly recommend it to someone who may find a personal connection to the message of the book

Acurate
I would recommend this book to a hispanic or mexican audience. The book accurately depicts a mexican mother daughter relationship. I liked that they did not hide the way they treat and talk to one another in the real world. I disliked that they included sexual thoughts a teenage girl would think but it stayed realistic. Overall the book is very good and i recommend to new readers over 13.

Very Realistic
I enjoyed how the book was very realistic, it didnt hide from the way it is to grow up hispanic or even the hardships that came with it. Along with it being realistic it didn't turn a blind eye to topics like suicide or depression and sexual assault
