The tales collected for Irish Fairy and Folk Tales all are reprinted from nineteenth-century sources, but they date back much further, to a time when they were part of a centuries-old oral tradition of storytelling and had yet to be committed to the printed page. These are stories that passed down through the ages virtually unaltered in their telling. To those who told and listened to them, they expressed something fundamental about Irish culture and the Irish way of life. The stories in this volume feature a wide variety of fantastic beings, including ghosts, witches, fairies and changelings, but several feature creatures that are virtually exclusive to Ireland: the banshee, the merrow, the pooka, and the leprechaun. Read these tales of frightening supernatural horrors, brave folk heroes and everyday people clever enough to outwit the devil and you'll agree that they could only take place on Irish soil. Irish Fairy and Folk Tales is one of Barnes & Noble's Collectible Editions classics. Each volume features authoritative texts by the world's greatest authors in an elegantly designed bonded-leather binding, with distinctive gilt edging.

STOP WITH THE PAPER STICKERS

For the love of god Barnes and Noble. Stop with the low quality paper stickers that shred and leave adhesive all over your brand new book. Either make them easy to remove or don't put them on. This is a decent book, literally ruined by the stickers B&N puts on them. Also, do not use rubbing alcohol to remove the extra paper and adhesive. It smears the dye on the covers and ruins your copy.

NOT a hardcover book

Book was advertised as Hardcover. It is not. It feels like a paperback with a faux leather cover. I could excuse this for $8.. However, the entire reason for buying one of these collectible books is for the appearance. B&N put two stickers on the book; one on the front and one on the back. I was able to peel these off, but they left an unsightly sticky residue. I'm going to have to use baby oil or some other method of removing the adhesive, and run the risk of destroying the artwork on the front and back covers! I am VERY disappointed in B&N. Shame on you, Barnes and Noble! A bookseller should Know and DO better!
