This groundbreaking book offers a compelling understanding of inherited trauma and fresh, powerful tools for relieving its suffering. Mark Wolynn is a wise and trustworthy guide on the journey toward healing. Tara Brach, PhD, author of Radical Acceptance and True Refuge A groundbreaking approach to transforming traumatic legacies passed down in families over generations, by an acclaimed expert in the field Depression. Anxiety. Chronic Pain. Phobias. Obsessive thoughts. The evidence is compelling- the roots of these difficulties may not reside in our immediate life experience or in chemical imbalances in our brains but in the lives of our parents, grandparents, and even great-grandparents. The latest scientific research, now making headlines, supports what many have long intuited that traumatic experience can be passed down through generations. It Didn't Start with You builds on the work of leading experts in post-traumatic stress, including Mount Sinai School of Medicine neuroscientist Rachel Yehuda and psychiatrist Bessel van der Kolk, author of The Body Keeps the Score. Even if the person who suffered the original trauma has died, or the story has been forgotten or silenced, memory and feelings can live on.

Lazy and self-serving

While expecting a review of the damages, nuances, causes, and effects of intergenerational trauma, the book produced is nothing but mommy-blaming and abuse-forgiving nonsense that the author claims is "science" but is merely self-serving rhetoric.

An absolutely terrible book

I had heard so many good things about this book and finally bought a copy a few weeks ago. It started off very promising, but the quality nose dives very quickly as the author tries to make huge leaps in relating stories to the proven science behind it. The author tries to shove his own spiritual beliefs at every turn that I stopped reading about halfway through because it was so bad. Absolutely do not recommend wasting your time or money on this.

This Book is a Game Changer

This book changed my life. I use the same practices outlined in each chapter with my patients. So far, the results have been excellent.

Not for actual Trauma

This guy clearly has really unhealthy spiritual beliefs that are overriding his ability to understand trauma. After reading The Body Keeps the Score, which was incredibly well researched, it is quite clear that there are better ways to heal. This book was only painful for me, not healing at all. I absolutely do not recommend this book to anyone and especially not if you have Trauma.

An Eye Opening and Life Changing Read

Steeped in scientific studies and new findings from the field of epigenetics, IT DIDN'T START WITH YOU is a potent and profound opportunity to change the way we see ourselves and what we struggle with. The missing, untold and secret parts of our family's story are very telling. As it turns out, the words we use to describe our issues say more than we realize. This book is a roadmap that allows us to explore and ultimately disentangle ourselves from the unresolved tragedies of the past with a compassionate heart. It is salve for the soul. Mark Wolynn walks the talk. Opening up about his own healing journey was the the street cred that is oh-so essential for me when heeding advice from others. I am no stranger to personal development books and workshops but Mark's teachings and tools are fresh and fascinating. It's cutting edge. Read the book. Answer the questions. Do the exercises. They are not only compelling and thought provoking, they are life changing. I had one lightbulb moment after another. The affect was visceral. Not only did I have a new understanding of myself, I felt different in my body. It was like I had room to breath for the very first time. I am forever changed because of Mark's wisdom and writings. If you struggle with a chronic health condition, suffer with anxiety or depression, are exhausted from trying to find explanations for unexplained feelings... if you are that person, then this is your book.

I'm torn

This book truly contains some life-changing information. Highly recommend committing to the exercises he suggests. With that being said, the book is drawn out. I didn't gain any additional information from the last 80 pages and it was somewhat of a chore to finish. Also, his client examples are fairytale-like in nature and most likely fabricated...maybe a tiny thread of truth hidden somewhere. Every single story goes as follows: "I helped this person recognize this pattern in their family...and upon this revelation they are now they're miraculously successful/rich/happy/healthy etc!". Obviously generational trauma doesn't absolve in the blink of an eye, and most likely requires much deeper processing and integration than he insinuates.
