Loose ankle straps

I loved the shoe but the straps around the ankle were very loose. I usually wear a size 8.5-9 and tried a 9 on these. The shoe fit but the straps did not, no support around the ankle when walking. Might trying sizing down to an 8.5 but didn't really like the front angle of the shoe, only the sides seem flattering if that makes sense. I purchased the black.
