At times it is really hard to find words for books. I read all the SHADOW & BONE books, read the SIX OF CROWS duology, then watched the tv show. Then I picked up KING OF SCARS and whoa, Leigh Bardugo did not disappoint. As you know, I was already head over heels in love with the SIX OF CROWS duology and KING OF SCARS keeps that momentum going with Bardugo’s excellent writing craft and storytelling. Plus, it has some of my favorite characters telling the story from their points of views! -I easily fell into this story. The plot, the characters, the story - everything - was so easy to love! -Zoya. I love her. Her narrations give me life. -Nikolai. I love him. His narrations give me life. -Nina. I love her. Her narrations made me so happy to see, yet they also crushed my soul. -The switching POVs that make the story marvelous! Just like in the SIX OF CROWS duology it made the story so much better! -The ending… It was a ride. Such a good ride. It left me so excited for RULE OF WOLVES. This was such a good book!! So much happened and it so shows what a planner that Bardugo is. Definitely will be rereading KING OF SCARS again! King of Scars
This story continues from the Grishaverse where Nikolai Lantsov, King of Ravka tries to rebuild his country following the Ravka Civil War while also fending off demons and the Darkling. His friend and powerful Squaller, Zoya Nazyalensky and Nina Zenik aka: Mila Jandersdat help him with his quest. They all form an allegiance to stop the threats to his country and the Grisha Army. This young adult fantasy novel with it’s worldbuilding characters was a fascinating read.

Enjoyable but not fully satisfying
This year has been all about the Grishaverse for me. Partially in preparation for the Netflix series releasing later this year, and the world Bardugo created is so freaking cool! King of Scars follows Bardugo’s typical pattern of character chapters. Namely the story lines of Nikolai, Nina, and Zoya. Most readers going into this book have or had high hopes of delving deeper into Nikolai’s past, present, and future. As a HUGE fan of this beloved character I was really hoping for a deep dive into his background, but was left feeling slightly unsatisfied. Maybe Leigh did that on purpose to sell the next book. I’ll definitely be grabbing a copy! The “girl power’” vibe of this book was pretty dope. I really did enjoy getting a deeper appreciation for Nina and Zoya. You can definitely go from liking to loving these ladies if you didn’t already before. Overall King of Scars was super likable, but it wasn’t satisfying enough to earn 5 stars from me.
