Winner of the National Book Award A New York Times Bestseller "The queer romance we've been waiting for. Ms. Magazine Seventeen-year-old Lily Hu can't remember exactly when the feeling took root that desire to look, to move closer, to touch. Whenever it started growing, it definitely bloomed the moment she and Kathleen Miller walked under the flashing neon sign of a lesbian bar called the Telegraph Club. Suddenly everything seemed possible. But America in 1954 is not a safe place for two girls to fall in love, especially not in Chinatown. Red-Scare paranoia threatens everyone, including Chinese Americans like Lily. With deportation looming over her father despite his hard-won citizenship Lily and Kath risk everything to let their love see the light of day. Cover image may vary.

This book is so beautiful and well-written- I couldn’t put it down and got to the end in a day! The chemistry between the two lovebirds is incredible and truthfully? I’ll never recover from this book. Bury it in my casket with me.

Who Are You (REALLY)?

⚠️ WARNING: There are racial undertones for the time period and mention of a miscarriage⚠️ This is such an amazing journey for Lily Hu, on her path to self-discovery as a lesbian Chinese American teenager in 1950s Chinatown, California. Lily and her childhood best friend, Shirley, start to drift a part senior year as Shirley tries to set Lily up with childhood friend, Will, and Lily is finally realizing she isn't interested in boys the way all the other girls are. She finds a book in the back of a convenience store that has her questioning everything she knows to be "right" vs "wrong" along with her new friendship with Kath. She struggles with being the good Chinese girl her family knows and accepts and being true to herself. My overall ratings for enjoyment, romance, and spice are ⭐⭐⭐⭐/💖💖/1/2🌶️ It is a VERY slooooooooow burn and is extinguished almost immediately.

This book broke my heart so many times.

This book broke my heart so many times. I was a very confused teenager in the 1990s, with very little support or opportunity to explore my self. This book helped my inner teenager - while wondering what if. The complexity, fear of being discovered, hiding behind "friendship" - oh my heart. Lily has always felt differently than other girls, especially her closest friend. But then the other girl in her math class, Kath, hands back the ad for a drag king. So well done - the time period, the family reaction, the found community. Loved it!

Sticks with you long after you close the last page

This is one of those books that sticks with you long after you close the last page. As someone who doesn't gravitate towards historical fiction as a genre, I was apprehensive to read this book. Especially because it's a tad on the longer side as well. However, by the time I finished it, I was wishing for more pages, more story, just MORE. The book follows a young woman, Lily, as she navigates her identity as a queer woman. She stumbles on an underground gay club, called the Telegraph Club, with her *friend* Kath. In the 1950's it's not a safe space for them to explore their love for one another, and where they live in Chinatown, the Red Scare is looming over everyone. This book has all the heart, all the emotion, and is just so beautifully written. I have recommended it many times, to many friends since. I read it via e-book but am going to need a physical copy for my shelves STAT.

Exquisite story of Asian-Am lesbian coming of age

Malinda Lo did meticulous research for this novel about two San Francisco high school girls who fall in love in the fifties, when being called a ‘deviant’ and being caught at a lesbian club could mean arrest or deportation. I was immediately pulled into the life and mind of ‘good Chinese girl’ Lily Hun as she longs to go to a male impersonator show, and awakens slowly to her attractions to women. In a story with delicious scenes and narration about the era, life in Chinatown and San Francisco, and the heart and mind of Lily, I wanted to stay with Lily, her friends, and her family or a long time. Lo generously includes an appendix with the federal, state, and local history on which the novel is based in the areas of Asian Americans in California, San Francisco, Chinatown, lesbian and gay life, male impersonators and even the language used. It shows how historically accurate this novel is. A treat on both a story and historical level and for all who care about lesbian herstory.

Beautiful

This book is incredible and different than expected. It's a coming of age story for a 17 year old trying to uncover their sexuality and place in the world. It was full of hope and heartbreak, and I loved that the story followed Lily through her thought process and life choices. Great read!
