Old dead batteries in this “new” ornament?

Battery almost dead when it arrived. Not sure if I’ll bother trying to return the ornament or buy new special batteries for it - which are expensive. I’m guessing this was last year’s ornament which is why on sale? Shouldn’t have tried to “save money” I guess.
