New York Times Bestseller. Now a Netflix Film"Rich, tragic...monumental true-crime reporting at its best. "-Washington Post The bestselling account of the lives of five young women whose fates converged in the perplexing case of the Long Island Serial Killer. Now updated, with a new epilogue by the author. One late spring evening in 2010, Shannan Gilbert-after running through the oceanfront community of Oak Beach screaming for her life-went missing. No one who had heard of her disappearance thought much about what had happened to the twenty-four-year-old- she was a Craigslist escort who had been fleeing a scene-of what, no one could be sure. The Suffolk County police, too, seemed to have paid little attention-until seven months later, when an unexpected discovery in a bramble alongside a nearby highway turned up four bodies, all evenly spaced, all wrapped in burlap. But none of them Shannan's. There was Maureen Brainard-Barnes, last seen at Penn Station in Manhattan three years earlier, and Melissa Barthelemy, last seen in the Bronx in 2009. There was Megan Waterman, last seen leaving a hotel in Hauppauge, Long Island, just a month after Shannon's disappearance in 2010, and Amber Lynn Costello, last seen leaving a house in West Babylon a few months later that same year. Like Shannan, all four women were petite, in their twenties.

Excellent! Memorable!

A fantastic book. The author makes a great effort to humanize the sex workers and to show us (the readers) the inside world of escorts: The job is quite difficult and beset with dangers. Some portions of the book are quite disturbing such as the police's reticence to investigate correctly the cases because the victims are escorts. There are a lot of sadness in the pages, but hopefully, the investigations will lead to a resolution and to some form of justice.... A memorable book in many ways!

Highly recommend

“When they disappeared, only their families were left to ask what became of them. Few others seemed to care, not even the police. That all changed once the bodies were found on Gilgo Beach. Then, a few miles from where Shannan had last been seen alive, the police flailed, the body count increased, the public took notice, and the neighbors began pointing fingers. There, in a remote community out of sight of the beaches and marinas scattered along the South Shore barrier islands, the women’s stories finally came together, now all part of the same mystery.” In Lost Girls An Unsolved American Mystery by Robert Kolker, the author tells the unsolved murder story of The Long Island Serial killer and the stories of his victims. Learning so much about the victims, and their families was an intense experience. It was heartbreaking to see how little their story seemed to matter to law enforcement and the public until the story began to receive more press attention. The book poses thought provoking questions about society and how we view people. And also about families. My one complaint is that I did have trouble keeping the names and the families straight because of how the author arranged the book. But I would still highly recommend this one to any true crime fan. I give the book 4.5 stars.
