Size not what I expected

I bought two dresses from Macy's, both size 12. One of them fit very well, but this dress did not fit at all. It's a lot more curvy than the size chart indicates, I'd say it's like 2-3 inches wider by the chest & hips than indicated. It's also longer than I expected. I returned it because tailoring it would've been more expensive than the dress itself. I'm 5'9, 150 lbs for reference.
