Based on the old fashioned flip top mechanism to ensure your food product is safe from moisture and/or bugs, a rubber ring is included to separate jar glass from the glass lid. I don't have the problem others are reporting, but then again, I have quite a few antique jars which are similar. And I have arthritis.
To wash I place disassembled wiring, rubber rings, lids and jars dishwasher after taking the easily removed wiring of the jar lids, then reattach after cleaning. I also ensure the flip top is on a flat facing, rather than a corner.
I have at least 2 dozen in various sizes and only one arrived crushed. Was replaced via mail ASAP.
