Toe box much too small from top to bottom

I have size 12 feet. I received the large size (12-13) as a gift. The slippers are more than long enough, but my toes are compressed because the toe box is too small from top to bottom (the material on the front upper section of the slipper is cut too small). The slippers are unwearable. It's disappointing because the slippers are very well made.
