No music to my ears

Received this puzzle from a friend. I put new batteries in and it does not work. Feeling disappointed.

Hi! Here are a few important details to know about our sound puzzles: They’re light-activated, and once new batteries have been installed, it’s best to use the puzzle in a brightly lit room. When you remove a puzzle piece from the board, you’ll see a little circle, which is the light sensor. Depending on the style, once the sensor has been exposed to light, you’ll hear the sound OR when you place the puzzle piece back on the board. If playing with your puzzle in a well-lit room does not make each piece “sound off” consistently, please give us a call and we'll be more than happy to help you. Kids Liked It Better Than Adults

My granddaughters (ages 3 and 18 months) loved this puzzle, but the 3 year old just wanted to slam the pieces on and off to start and stop the sound, which was very jarring for anyone nearby! Also, each instrument played the same tune, which was a little disappointing.
