Fascinating
Chris Voss was a 25-year career FBI top negotiator for hostage crises and now runs his own negotiation consulting group. His tips for negotiating have bested Harvard business school professionals, demonstrating their usefulness in different settings. I found this book highly readable and many of his strategies fascinating. I particularly connected with his simultaneous recognition of the emotionality inherent in negotiations coupled with his emphasis on a calm and empathetic approach to the process.

As one of the venerable FBI hostage negotiators who has ran the gamut of terrorism and hostage cases in his decorated career, Voss lays the groundwork for the techniques he learned from admission of both successes and failures. Intertwined with his methods are authentic case studies of how he used his skillset to diffuse his suspects, defuse the tensest of situations, and penultimately how he became one of the subject matter expert of his field. The book itself is concise in a manner where it could be read in pieces and practiced before taking the next step to fully enrich oneself in the art of negotiation. Yet, it gives the perspective that whether you’re a master negotiator or a novice, that negotiation is an art form that requires immense practice and learning from an expert such as Voss is wholly not a bad idea. It could save your life, your job, or even your marriage.
