Soon to be a Netflix animated film! Nimona is the New York Times bestselling graphic novel sensation from ND Stevenson, based on his beloved and critically acclaimed web comic. Kirkus says, "If you're going to read one graphic novel this year, make it this one". Nemeses! Dragons! Science! Symbolism! All these and more await in this brilliantly subversive, sharply irreverent epic from ND Stevenson. Featuring an exclusive epilogue not seen in the web comic, along with bonus conceptual sketches and revised pages throughout, this gorgeous full-color graphic novel has been hailed by critics and fans alike as the arrival of a "superstar" talent (NPR.org). Nimona is an impulsive young shapeshifter with a knack for villainy. Lord Ballister Blackheart is a villain with a vendetta. As sidekick and supervillain, Nimona and Lord Blackheart are about to wreak some serious havoc. Their mission- prove to the kingdom that Sir Ambrosius Goldenloin and his buddies at the Institution of Law Enforcement and Heroics aren't the heroes everyone thinks they are. But as small acts of mischief escalate into a vicious battle, Lord Blackheart realizes that Nimona's powers are as murky and mysterious as her past. And her unpredictable wild side might be more dangerous than he is willing to admit.

The Inspiration for the Hit New Movie

When I saw the trailer for the movie adaption, I knew I had to pick this book up before I saw it. And while there are a lot of differences between this book and the movie, I'm happy to say that both are extremely entertaining and worthwhile experiences. Ballister and Nimona's have an amazing dynamic, with Ballister's more calculated and reserved demeanor making for a great contrast with Nimona's impulsive energy. I'm a sucker for stories about found family, and their relationship is the heart and soul of both versions of the story. I also enjoyed the relationship between Balister and Ambrosious. How both feel betrayed by the other, but still can't help but care for the other in some way. For readers looking for a fun read with some strong LGBTQ+ characters and themes, definitely give this book a chance.

Witty, Adorable, and So Much More Than I Expected

This is the story of Nimona who convinces one of the villains, Lord Ballister, to let her be his sidekick. The type A, meticulous planner Lord Ballister is in over his head accepting this chaotic, impulsive girl as his sidekick. This was adorable and completely unexpected. I went in expecting a cute graphic novel (which is what I got), but it was even more than that with layered plots and characters (and way more tears than I bargained for at the end!).
