Edgy contemporary with sensitive topics

The relationship feels realistic, more than most in books. It’s got ups and downs, it’s relatable, and both people make constant mistakes. That’s not to say that it’s a HEALTHY relationship, because it’s definitely not that. It’s just realistic. Connell’s mental health representation is also realistic. I appreciated that it didn’t feel like a single counselor session “fixed” him, as so many books try to do. Lastly, this one tackles big topics like sadomasochism, depression, familial abuse, and drug use. It also dances with the idea of toxic relationships. Readers who want an edgy contemporary that introduces a lot of sensitive topics will like this one the best.

Not for me (YET)

I wanted this book since I was around 19yrs old after seeing a person read it on YouTube. But waited because I was told that it wouldn’t be appropriate for my age, and they were right. But I’ve since read it. I still don’t think I’m ready for this book, ready to understand its true meaning yet. So while I like the way it was written, hopefully one day I can figure out what this book means to me.

Eye opening

I bought this book to meet the buy 1 get 1 50% but didn’t realize that I picked up something I truly needed. I hate that at the time I related to Marianne and Connell’s relationship but seeing how their relationship with each other and others played out made me think I need to reevaluate the relationships in my life. Even though I probably shouldn’t have looked into the meaning that much, it provided me with an eye opening experience and made me understand the importance of self love and confidence.

it wasn’t so bad

I did not love it, but I liked it. This was my first book by Rooney and I like the way she writes which is definitely not for everyone. I liked the book, it took me longer than usual to read it because there was nothing interesting happening. I really enjoyed the drama and how Connell and Marianne seemed to love each other even after all the ups and downs. Reading this book felt like reading a diary for the most part because the things Rooney wrote are so normal, like things that definitely happen to normal people. There is drama, abuse, codependency, and trauma, stuff that normal people deal with… I feel like that was the only thing that made me like the book, the way the author made it so relatable. Connell and Marianna do have a toxic relationship going on and even though they manage to find each other again and again, I see how they also care for their friendship, especially by the end of the book. Will I read more books from Sally Rooney? I am not sure, don’t think I will for a long time, I am simply happy that I read this one and it wasn’t so bad.

WOW WOW WOW

this book is amazing. I have no words to describe this. This book is beautifully tragic. Light, yet so deep. I wish I could read this book over again for the first time. This book will stick with me long after I’ve finished it. For anyone second guessing, DO IT!!

Reflection of love in reality

Almost 5 stars, only because the book takes longer than expected to “pick up” the reader’s interest. In other words, it’s a slow-building experience until all of a sudden… it becomes so good you refuse to put down. Being honest, I began to think this book would be a DNF for me until I put my whole imagination into it and gave it a chance. I am grateful I did so!
