Return and Exchange issues

Purchased as a gift for a friend. A SUPERVISOR told me I was able to return if item did not fit and provided me with a proof of purchase AND gift receipt. Macys will not accept the return or even exchange for a different size. It is incredibly frustrating that a supervisor misinformed a customer and proceeded with a purchase given the customers concern. What type of sales ladies are you hiring?
