Many who choose to read this particular volume are probably award of the author's podcast by the same title, and may be familiar with the format employed in the book for exploring the poems included within. Ó Tuama's selection of these particular fifty poems is fantastic- I love his taste in poets and their work. Yet, even more impressive than the extraordinary poems that made the cut is the thoughtful commentary that is included with each one. Even though I like to think that I can mine a bit of thoughtful analysis from a poem, I am left in slack-jawed amazement at the author's insight that completely eluded me as I read the selections. Ó Tuama's biographical info, backstory explanations, and form analysis are as helpful and engaging as they can be. I'm left in wonder at the depths of understanding that he helps me to achieve in each of these splendid poems. Time and again I sate quietly and ruminated at length on a particular poem and the author's analysis before moving on to the next. I'm looking greatly forward to revisiting many of these soon and even committing a few to memory, so taken was I with the quality of the contents of this extraordinary book.

Diverse poetry collection with analysis
In Poetry Unbound, Pádraig Ó. Tuama shares 50 contemporary poems from a variety of authors. He analyzes the poems in a way that makes them feel accessible to the reader and shares how they affected him personally. This book was inspired by a podcast he leads, and after reading the book, I am interested in checking out the podcast! The poems he selected for this book cover a variety of topics and from all different viewpoints; I think he made great selections. I enjoyed listening to the audiobook, especially with Tuama’s accent. My only complaint with that format was that there was nothing to indicate when we were moving on from one poem to the next – not a longer break or title to indicate we have moved to a new chapter. I think that would have been helpful. Many thanks to NetGalley for providing me an audio ARC of this book.
